BEST IN SHOW

Firstly I would like to thank this wonderful committee for inviting me to judge their golden Jubilee Open Show, thank you to all my stewards who kept the ring running smoothly, mouths were good overall and no major concerns, some dogs could do with being a bit fitter as this is something we can change. Lastly I would like to thank all the exhibitors for letting me go over their dogs for me to give my opinion, I had a great day judging. Thank you for my lovely gifts too.

SPECIAL AWARD CLASSES

Just wanted to start off by saying thank you to the committee and a special mention to Lesley McFadyen for allowing us to stay with her the night before the show. The club put their all in and it paid off. The show ran smoothly and the food was amazing. The venue was great and the atmosphere seemed to be very upbeat. Love a nice little breed open show! I would also like to thank the exhibitors for your entries. I was more than happy with the entry numbers and the quality of dogs in them 3 classes were brilliant! I don’t mention mouths in my critique as overall mouths were very good. Thank you all again for having me, I thoroughly enjoyed myself!

PUPPY DOG/BITCH (8,1 abs)

Good class of puppies

1st Mr D Constant’s Sikaistaff Cask StrengTh

Black brindle bitch of excellent quality. Beautiful head, nice and clean with thin lips, round dark eyes and lovely rose ears which she used to finish off her wicked expression. Good, well boned straight front and nicely padded tight feet. Pleasing amount of rib for one so young and a level topline while on the move and stacked. Her handler did struggle a little. But I’m a believer in if you see someone struggling there is no harm in helping them stack/slightly move feet. I quickly set her front correct, stood back and I’d more than seen enough for her to get first place. More ring craft training and they would make a great team! Beautiful puppy congratulations I’m sure you will have fun with her!

2nd Mr A & Mrs L Mayren’s FergiestaffS Polar Bear

A well balanced pied mature puppy. Beautiful head and wicked expression! Which goes well with his attitude! Plenty of substance, nice spring of rib, close coupled and a level topline. Moved very well up and down the mat. Unlucky to meet 1st today. Handled lovely

3rd Mrs L M & Mrs K Woolley & Johnson’s Bethaleese'S Carbon Copy

Red standard bitch. Good head and a good amount of width to her well boned, straight front. Nice spring of rib and close coupled. Moved nicely once settled. Be interesting to see her once mature.

OPEN DOG (17,4)

1st Mr G R Mrs C E Mr C J & Mrs J Thomas & Griffiths Ch Gazstaff’s Black Magic

Black brindle standard dog that I have judged previously as a youngster and boy he hasn’t half matured into a nice dog. I can understand why he is a champion. Very sound dog, nothing exaggerated on him at all. What you see is what you get. Moved beautiful up and down the mat effortlessly. Handled good and credit to owner for his condition.

2nd Mrs K & Miss J & Mr S Wilson’s Northstaff Nightmare

Black brindle dog who’s a nice tidy dog. Again, another dog I have judged previously. He’s maturing nicely and will be interesting to see once fully matured. Beautiful head and expression with a lovely ear set. Enough width and bone to his front to compliment him. Beautiful, nice tight well padded feet. Level topline and close coupled. Moved very nice up and down the mat and pleasing to the eye from all angles. Handled perfectly by his young lady handler.

3rd Mr T & Miss R Lowe & Kaur-Hayre Big Man On Mac Dui Shawrigg JW

This red strong dog is all Stafford. Substance in bucket loads. Nice head on this young dog that’s clean with no extra flesh. Small rose ears which he uses very well. Wide, strong front, good spring of rib, and a level topline he holds while on the move. Handled very well.

OPEN BITCH (17,5)

I must say this class was the icing on the cake for me today. I was genuinely spoilt for choice.

1st Miss G L & Mr D Rowe & South Illori Constellation JW

Black brindle bitch who I personally think should be doing more winning than what she is. Standard bitch with a beautiful head and expression that just melts you. Round dark eyes, lovely neat thin ears, there was nothing I didn’t like about her head to be honest. Her front was well boned wide and straight. Lovely tight well padded feet. Nice amount of rib and a level topline. Well let down hocks. Really good condition and balanced from all angles. Handled nicely, just one thing her handler needs to be careful of is standing her back legs too far back. A bitch I would be proud to have on my sofa! Well done and thank you for bringing her.

2nd Mr J D & Mrs S M Hammonds CH Hammystaff Love Bomb JW

White and red pied bitch that I have admired ring side and she certainly didn’t disappoint getting my hands on her. I will be honest and say I loved these 2 bitches and was spoilt for choice. Lovely nice shaped head with small rose thin ears. Well boned wide front with the correct amount of brisket, fabulous spring of rib and a level top line. Moved effortlessly up and down the mat. This bitch was the best conditioned dog I went over on the day. Credit where credit is due. Worthy champion. Just preferred ever so slightly the expression on first place. Thank you for bringing her.

3rd Mrs L M Shipp’s Ch Delacour Sweetest Taboo For Idyllicstaff JW

Black brindle and white pied bitch. Another cracking bitch. Beautiful head, nice and clean, used her ears to show off her expression. Good front on her with correct amount of rib. Very balanced and a nice blend of bull and terrier. Moved well up and down the mat. Handled lovely.

DOGS

What an absolute honour to judge at the Golden Jubilee Championship Show of the Club that you have been involved with for almost forty years, and what a show it was.  The Committee pulled out all the stops to ensure that everything was organised and executed according to plan, and that all exhibitors and visitors left with goodies, a smile on their faces and good memories of a day spent with the East Anglians!

Thank you so very much to all that entered your dogs for my assessment, not every dog can win a prize but I hope that every exhibitor felt that their dog had my full consideration.  Every single dog showed the very best of temperaments, meeting me like an old friend. On a hot day I wasn’t aware of any dogs not coping, Mouths, on the whole, were acceptable, just one undershot, a few with some untidy dentition. I didn’t note any badly misplaced canine teeth although where have those large canines gone? Fitness was on a reasonable level, and presentation generally is good.  As is seen at a lot of shows these days there is a divergence of size and shapes, if breeders aim for a balanced blend without exaggeration they are likely to hit the mark.

As always, when judging there are compromises to be made but I was pleased with my final line up and truly feel there are a few dogs in there that will reach the dizzy heights quite easily.  At the end of the day I was delighted to be in full agreement with my friend and co-judge, Mary Coble, for the ‘bests’ - the dog stole both of our hearts for Best in Show, with the bitches holding their own for the remaining top awards.  Good luck to you all for the future – it was, indeed, a Golden Day!

MINOR PUPPY DOG (4, 1 abs)

1st PASSERNOMEN JUCUNTIUS JOCO

Three very different puppies, at different stages of their development, so quite a conundrum to unravel. This young dog is still a raw youngster with time on his side.  He has good length to his muzzle with strength of underjaw and no excess fleshiness, an earnest expression with dark eyes, and was in tune with his handler. On the move, he moved with the enthusiasm you would expect from a puppy, displaying a correct topline and securing his place with sound front action

2nd   MATRIXSTAFFS KNIGHT STAR

This young fellow has the maturity lacking in his classmates today, showing a developing skull shape with good width to his muzzle. He has ample width to his front, lovely solid bone and neat feet with good padding.  He will be an interesting dog to watch mature, good luck with him

3rd POWERPACK SINGULARITY

A pup that needs time to come together but has everything there for the making.  He sports enough bone and has a decent body shape with ribs already springing.  He is clean in muzzle and has a pleasing breadth to his skull with cheek bumps developing.

PUPPY DOG  (3)

1st SKYLAND IMPERIAL

An impressive young pup with plenty of ring presence, this chap had the advantage of better balance at this stage.  He is another with a good width to muzzle and skull, showing a distinct stop without being overdone and he has great pigmentation, which enhances his expression. His body shape is developing nicely with enough brisket and strength in pasterns.  He showed enough width and angulation to his rear end.  Beaten to BPIS by his litter sister today, he has a bright future  BEST PUPPY DOG & BEST OPPOSITE SEX PUPPY

 2nd TORKAVI NIGHT FURY

Another promising youngster with a lot to like, stronger in head than 1st, with a very engaging expression, plenty of width to his skull and a pronounced underjaw. He has correct width to his front,  solid, round bone and a shapely rib coming on, though a little longer cast than the class winner.  He was presented in excellent coat and condition and worked nicely for his handler

3rd PASSERNOMEN JOCUNDO

Giving a lot away in maturity at not quite seven months, this puppy needs time to develop and settle.  He has a clean skull and muzzle with good pigmentation , level topline at all times and a smooth, close coat with fabulous shine

 JUNIOR DOG (6, 1 abs)

1st BIGGLESWICK MR TOM (AI)

Another decision not made easy by the quality of the dogs, whilst I appreciated the bone and substance of the 2nd placed dog, the cleaner outline and settled, free movement of the winner tipped him the wink. Both smart, typical Staffords in contrasting ways this beautifully pigmented red dog has everything set in the right place, although he has some maturing to do still.  He is one of those dogs where there is no exaggeration and everything flows seamlessly from one part to the next.  I’ll be interested to see him when in his prime

2nd KAMARISTAFFS ROYAL RANSOM AT BOWTMAN

No denying this lad is all male Stafford!  He has a melting expression, with neatly set and carried ears, strong skull and muzzle, with cheek muscles well pronounced.  Width is a word I could use throughout and it is pleasing to see, his shoulders are well angled, round, strong bone and padded feet, a spring of rib very evident and width to his rear, which is muscled, with correct set on and carriage of tail. Smart dog – I hope he has done his main growing and now just hones his virtues

3rd KANNECHOR GUESS HE’S BACK

This young dog is a standard sized chap of good balance with an appealing and typical expression, using his ears to advantage. Only just junior age so plenty of time to continue maturing, he was presented well, just not quite the keenness of the two in front of him today - I liked his style

Res CWMHAF AMBASSADOR

VHC  HIGHBOURNE LORDOFTHEDANCE AT KNOCKON                                                                                         (AI) (Imp Aust)

YEARLING DOG (5, 1 abs)

What a smashing class – not the biggest in numbers but each had lovely qualities.  It must be mentioned, although Reserve in the class doesn’t get a critique, he wasn’t beaten all day for ‘dog with the waggiest tail’!

1st KEEPASTAFF LITTLE BENZ

Va Va Voom - loved this dog!  What a fabulous picture he presents, flashy markings, superb coat and in such good nick.  He is upstanding, on great feet with strong pasterns and a lovely width to his front.  His brisket has dropped as required and his rib is sprung just right at this age providing him with shape when viewed from all angles. A classic head shape, if I were to criticise at all it would be a rounder eye shape would be ideal, but his eyes are dark and piercing, his underjaw is strong and his ear carriage is just perfect. He moved like a dream, holding his topline and driving from a strong rear end, with spot on tail carriage.  I think we will hear more of this lovely dog

2nd NIATONA WRECK IT RALPH

This beautifully marked dog lost out to the 1st placed dog by only a small margin, the winner showing a cleaner outline and more animation.  This chap has a really keen expression, love his powerful underjaw, noticeably wide open nostrils and pigmentation, he displays strength and masculinity. He stands on solid bone, looks from any angle as though he’d be hard to knock over, with a good width to his front, forechest in evidence and noticeable depth to his brisket, short in couplng, where he widens again into his angled rear with thigh development.

3rd ALPORT ON TOUR AT ETERNALCO

From a kennel known for its quality this is yet another, a standard dog with everything in the right place, he has type, strength and fire – all to be admired. He also has great pigmentation and a beautiful coat.  He was turned out in really good order though on the move lost his top line a little. A smart dog.

Res RONJAC ROB ROY MCGREGOR

MAIDEN DOG (3, 1 abs)

1st POWERPACK SINGULARITY

3rd in Minor Puppy, won this class by virtue of his more standard size and overall type

2nd BULLBROTHERS BURNING GOLD

An upstanding dog, handled to advantage, this dog had no excess flesh or exaggeration and showed a bang level topline. In comparison to the class winner his head lacked definition at this stage and he was straighter behind

NOVICE DOG (4)
1st ELITEBULL MISCHIEF AT BELLASTAFF JW

This dog won the class with consummate ease, a very typical example from this successful kennel, he will no doubt go on to bigger and better things. He has all the required attributes from neat ear carriage and pleasing expression, strength of head to his well held topline and maturing back end, I particularly liked his width and strong pigmentation.  He was presented to advantage, working well with his lady handler, my notes say a good dog all round.

2nd CWMHAF AMBASSADOR

Shown in the Junior class, with a Reserve placing, this young dog showed better with his owner/handler.  I have seen before that he doesn’t enjoy being stacked and then tends to drop off at the rear, but when more relaxed and free-stood his topline levelled out giving a better overall outline.  He has depth through his skull, with beautifully coal black, soulful eyes, well placed, and clean lips enhancing the expression.  His shoulders are well placed but currently he lacks width in front and needs forechest and brisket development to balance.  Not yet the finished article, he moved more positively than the dogs behind him in this class to secure a well deserved place

3rd FURRED BANDITS KING JOLIHEM (Imp Nor)

Typical looking, standard sized dog, nicely marked with a decent all over shape.  He has a pleasing length of muzzle and distinct stop without exaggeration, attractive expression ensured by well positioned and carried ears and round, dark eyes. He has a strong neck and his shoulder placement is fine although he gave away a little on top line and today he definitely wasn’t playing the game today when he moved

Res STAFF DREAM Z-GREY

GRADUATE DOG (7, 1 abs)

1st EARTHQUAKE STAFFS WEAR IT WELL AT TIGERBULL                                                                                                  (Imp Esp)

This dog is a class act, turned out in cracking condition with a real firm back end on him. He held his top line standing and then on the move with sound propulsion up and down the mat, showing balance in both skull and body proportions, while fixing me with his excellent expression.  He is a proper show boy with tremendous ring presence and commands attention – easy to see why he has done well in his show career so far, and not difficult to know that he will continue to do so.  Good luck with him!

2nd   ZAKDAN DEVIOUS DEVIL JW

While I was captivated by the expression and style of the 1st placed dog over this fellow, that is not to say that this lad is without many of his virtues.  He has certainly improved as he has matured, and that will, in my opinion, continue.  He has super weight of bone for his size with good balance, excellent pigmentation and neat, well padded feet with the desired turn out and strong pasterns.  He certainly scored over the rest of the class in width, angulation and power of his rear

3rd ITCHEBOREN RED LIPSTICK

Not quite the balance of the dogs placed above him, this dog also has good feet and strength in pasterns, although he is straighter behind.  His coat is of lovely texture, with clear markings and well pigmented. His head is without exaggeration or wrinkle, with a decent muzzle length but he lacks strength in underjaw. Whilst he has width to his front and enough rib there is insufficient brisket at this stage.

POST GRADUATE DOG (9, 2 abs)

1st NARKYA DEADPOOL

This class was quite a mixed one, with dogs not only of differing type but also of differing stages of development. The 1st placed dog is an upstanding chap with clean outline throughout, standing on decent bone and with neat feet.  He has a keen look, accentuated by dark, well placed eyes and was presented in a commendable coat and condition.  Although straighter in the rear end than the 2nd placed dog, he moved out reasonably and edged the class today by virtue of his maturity in body

2nd NORTHSTAFF NIGHTMARE

A lovely all over package, this dog knows how to show off what he has and works so well for his handler.  He has good head proportions with strength to his underjaw, noticeable cheek muscles and well pigmented throughout.. No excess flesh, decent weight of bone with required turn out at pastern and neat feet he is a fine young dog who will continue to develop and improve I feel

3rd TILLCARR FIRE COLLECTIVE

In contrast, this dog is a mature and very typy Stafford who held my attention throughout the class.  He is extremely well boned with a shapely body; I loved his honest expression, round, dark eyes and the neatest of well set ears, he was just a little ‘more’ than I was looking for

LIMIT DOG (10)

1st CATSTAFF’S SOUL REBEL – DOG CC & BEST IN SHOW

This class was great to judge as each dog carried plenty of virtue and thereby gave me lots to consider, however even in such strong competition this classy dog was always going to be in the mix and when it came to the decisions needed his style and ring presence secured him top spot.  He shows strength and balance with a clean outline, quality round bone, with width and shape to his body, each part complimenting the next.  His rib is well sprung, brisket showing plenty of heartroom, topline level with close coupling, and great rear angulation ensuring a no nonsense stride which meant he covered the ground with little effort which ultimately not only meant he headed this class but also that in the final line up he demanded – and got – the CC.  It was great to know that my co-judge felt the same way about him that I did and was happy with the Best in Show decision

2nd MARSTAFF THE REVENANT

A very smart dog of size and substance, this quality lad has great bone, a clean, straight front and smashing development of both rib and brisket. He showed a level topline both stacked and on the move, but today he just didn’t quite have the clean lines of the class winner

3rd ALPORT BOLD RULER

A well deserved 3rd place for this standard dog who was turned out in tip top condition.  He has a classic head shape and used his neat ears to enhance his expression.  Compact in body with short coupling, he has good width and angulation to his rear.  He moved well enough but not quite with the freedom of the two placed above him

OPEN DOG (12, 3 abs)

1st CALLASTAFF SON OF THE MOON – RESERVE DOG CC

Although I judged this dog as a young pup and awarded him then, today he was a real surprise for me.  Now, as a finished Staffordshire Bull Terrier, with no exaggeration, his balance and maturity is there for all to see. He has a really engaging expression, thin, rose ears carried so well, and good width of muzzle with depth of underjaw.  His neck is strong and his shoulders very well placed, brisket is deep and ribs are well sprung, all in all creating a picture of power and strength.  Compact in body and with a good bend of stifle to showcase his drive from the rear he presented a real picture of Stafford masculinity.  This was another class of top notch dogs and he took top spot; in the final line up he didn’t quite hold his topline so well on the move so had to give way to the Limit Dog for overall top honours, but nevertheless was well worthy of the RCC

2nd CH CATSTAFF’S USED TO

I remember this dog coming to our first Club open show following Covid and it was plainly obvious then that he would do well, and what a show career he has had, he has done it all in the very best company with nothing to prove.  He is of fabulous type and was presented in the very best condition today, muscles on muscles and with his coal black coat gleaming like shot silk.  A little shorter in neck than the class winner, he has the darkest of eyes, placed perfectly, that draw you in. He has smashing width to his skull and muzzle, a distinct stop and developed cheek muscles all ensuring a typical Stafford expression.  His body is compact and so well balanced with strength of rear that powered him on the mat. I was delighted to have had the opportunity to judge such a lovely Stafford

3rd CH GAZSTAFF’S BLACK MAGIC

And the lovely dogs just kept on coming!  A nicely balanced dog with a great head shape, distinct stop and nice length of muzzle, clean lipped, with dark eyes and neat ear carriage.  He has good width to his front commensurate with his back end, although a little less angulation than the dogs above him.  A shapely body with noticeable rib, he stands on solid bone with neat feet which would benefit from a little more padding, he was also turned out in the best nick, with a beautiful coat, which is just the way all dogs should be!

BRED BY EXHIBITOR, DOG (6, 4 abs)

1st CH GAZSTAFF’S BLACK MAGIC

Placed 3rd in Open, my notes said ‘fit as a butcher’s dog’!

2nd  POWERPACK TAM O’SHANTER JW

A really nice style of Stafford, no fleshiness, balanced width fore and aft with a properly set on tail.  Today he lost out on length of rib, but I loved his great overall shape without exaggeration, and especially his spotty white foot!

VETERAN (8, 1 abs)

1st    CH DAZMARNIC KNOW WOT I MEAN JW ShCM – BEST VETERAN DOG & BEST OPPOSITE SEX VETERAN

Lovely Bruno! I judged him and awarded him RCC in 2019 and was delighted to see he attained his Champion title.  Now a Veteran he is still retaining all those lovely qualities.  He has the most engaging expression: round, liquid eyes, balanced head properties, and a tinge of grey hair just making it all the better. He still moved like a dream and held his topline beautifully.  I loved his type and style, My Best Veteran Dog but he had to give way to his female counterpart in the contest for Best Veteran in Show – I doubt he or his lovely lady handler minded too much, they are both very gracious

2nd   ILLORI AKINLANA JW ShCM VW

I’ve had the pleasure of judging this lad in the past too and also meeting him out of the ring on numerous occasions – he never disappoints as he is always on his toes and turned out in the pink. His silver chops add a touch of dignity but he has a puppy like twinkle in his eye. Clean as a whistle throughout he has a good weight of bone and width to his front, leading to shoulders with a lovely lean muscle covering.  On the move he held his topline and drove out with good tail carriage

3rd  CH BIGGLESWICK SPLASH OF GINGE

Got to love the oldies because on top of all his other attributes today this lad still has plenty of fire! A lovely clear coat colour with great pigmentation, he has good bone and a shapely body with plenty of rib and brisket.  Strode down the mat like he owned it! ï»¿

SPECIAL AWARD CLASSES - BITCHES

Firstly, I’d like to express my thanks to the club for inviting me to judge the Special Award Classes at their Golden Jubilee Championship Show. It was wonderful to be involved in such a special day for the club. Thank you also to my stewards Aaron Hughes and Laila Strom for keeping the admin in good order and they were chaperoned well by Martin Johnson. And to you, the exhibitors who allowed me the privilege of judging your bitches. Stafford people truly are the best people. This appointment will have been another great learning experience, so my gratitude goes to you for bringing your girls along. The quality of the bitches in the ring was, in my opinion, rather high and with some of the exhibits on display, we’ll do just fine moving forward. I was happy with the choices that I made especially with being spoiled for choice in two of the classes – it certainly gave me a lot to think about. I never seen any major issues with these bitches that made me concerned and I think that getting them first thing in the morning before the day got warmer, I got them all pretty fresh and good to go. A couple of narrow fronts were on show and a couple of exhibits could have improvements on fitness.

Special Award Puppy Bitch  (4)
1st Howard,  CY & JS  Matrixstaffs Star Dancer

Black brindle and white, 7 months in age. Nice young lass with a pleasing expression coming from dark alert eyes and a correct ear carriage. When you catch her attention, she lights up. Her head has a good skull to muzzle ratio and is of good strength and developing nicely for her age. She carries a spot of substance so she does, and is well off for bone. Ample width to front with a brisket of good depth at this stage moving round to a decent spring of rib which blends well with a defined coupling and a nice tuck up. She held a good topline when static and on the move. When she was asked to move up and down the mat, she done so with ease and was driven well by strong looking rear quarters. She looked a bit unsettled at first but a change of handler alleviated that which I’m glad of as it allowed me to see her in a good light. Best of luck with her in the future – I think she’ll do well.

2nd Walker,  K & N

Torkavi The Last Dragon At Teshleystaf

Black brindle and white at 10 months old. Slightly finer bitch to first place. Straight away, gave me the stare and dared me to look away – what a cracking expression. She uses her eyes and ears to her advantage. Head well sculpted, nice and clean and developing well with a decent length of muzzle and tight enough about the lips. Good length and strength of neck leading down to a front of enough width. She’s well enough off for bone at this age. Decent enough spring of rib, well tucked up and moved up and down the ring with a good spot of drive when she settled. Like the first placed bitch, she has the right level of conditioning at this stage – keep doing what you’re doing with her. I just preferred the extra bit of substance on the first place.

3rd Miller, A &  E  SKYLAND CONSORT

Black brindle and white at just over 9 months. Standard sized young girl with a very pleasing expression. Not quite the strength of the two bitches placed before her but she’s a neat little package nonetheless. Nicely constructed head which is shaping well for age. She has a straight front that is coming along well also with adequate depth of brisket. She’s nice and compact with correct angulation and moved okay. She has an obvious affinity with her handler which makes them a good team and that will bode well for the future. She’ll do well. Another one that I’ll keep an eye out for.

Special Award Graduate Bitch (15, 3 abs)
1st: Taylor  TB & D  Niatona Sissy That Walk

Red and white just shy of 15 months. Flashy looking girl of really good type. This lass has one thing in abundance and that is substance. There is no chance she’d fall to bits if you whacked her on the backside with a rolled up newspaper or slipper. Lovely shaped head with good depth and width from her well pronounced cheek muscles and good muzzle length, all supported by a strong neck. Expression was spot on and goaded me to look away as she used her ears and that stare all too well. Sometimes when you get head markings that are not symmetrical, you have to take a right good second glance which, in this case, was fine by me as she’s extremely pleasing to the eye. Cracking front – nice and wide and a correct depth of brisket sitting at the elbow joints. Well muscled shoulders, good spring of rib. Hard to the touch from behind the withers down to her correctly set tail. Well conditioned and correctly angulated rear quarters that are solid and provide a proper level of discernible drive to allow her to move correctly and with ease up and down the mat. She’s made right so she moves right. She’s still a youngster yet so her conditioning is on point just now. When she gets beyond the 18 month mark, with the right work, I think she’ll go up a level. One I’ll be watching keenly.

2nd: Rowe & South, GL & D Illori Constellation JW

Black brindle bitch just past the two year mark. First thing that strikes you about her is the condition she’s in. This girl has had a ton of work done with her. She has a quality headpiece upon her – nice and clean with a cracking expression created by a right dark eye and good ear set. She has a nice wide front and is well catered for in bone. Her spring of rib is prominent and brisket is strong and of correct depth. When you run your hands down her back over the loin area she feels like she is made out of granite. A profile view of her shows you a great picture of the definition of the component parts. Her rear quarters fill your palms well and are solid, correctly angulated and well defined. She moved out well and with purpose when asked. The statement that says muscular, active and agile is well in play here. It takes a lot of dedication to get an exhibit in this condition – all credit to you. I just preferred that little bit smoother movement from the first place.

3rd: Cartwright, D &  J  Elitebull Skyefall JW

Black brindle at nearly 15 months. Another one with a bit of substance to her. Nice strong head with good depth and width to it and a nice keen expression to compliment that, strong neck leading down to a wide enough front with ample bone and a deep enough brisket. I’d prefer just a shaving off her in body to give a more conditioned look but she’s essentially still a youngster and that will come with maturity. She moved out well and then decided that I was more interesting than a wander up the mat – not often that it can be said that I’m interesting but such is the indiscriminate nature of dogs. Another young bitch who I think will do very well and I’d like a good look at her when she’s a couple of years of age.

Special Award Open Bitch 11(3)

1st: Hammond JD &  SM Hammystaff Love Bomb JW

White and red pied 22 months of age. A quality bitch packed full of strength at an age now where she’s starting to come right into her frame. Lovely head displaying plenty of depth and width and containing a distinct stop. Clean around the flews. Darkest of eye that she was using well on me to display a keen and alert expression (when she wasn’t giving mum the eyeball to get the treats out) She’s a package with bunches of substance – you wouldn’t want her running into you. Strong necked, wide front, plenty of bone, well sprung ribs, hard to the touch along the length of her body. Rear quarters – something else – bags of width, thickness and hardness to inner and outer thighs, they just scream raw power and that was shown when she was on the march up and down the mat where she displayed plenty of drive whilst holding a level topline. Her movement looks effortless. An all round solid little lass who will be at the top of the tree soon.

2nd: Hall L  Geordiestaff Nee Botha JW

Black brindle and white, 2 years 9 months of age. A bit finer than the first placed bitch but another one whose conditioning is very apparent from the off. Instantly dragged in by her expression too. Lovely head upon her. Well defined stop, good depth and width to cheek muscles along with a good length of muzzle. Well muscled neck leading down into a front of correct width. Well defined shoulders leading along to a nice spring of rib. In profile you can see that high level of definition. Hard to the touch along the loin muscles and around the inner and outer thighs. She moved well and with purpose. There were a few cracking bitches in this class but this girl’s conditioning and better width and definition of front saw her get her placing. I preferred the strength and substance of the first place to her though. A nice bitch and all credit to her owner for the work put in with her to turn her out in such fantastic condition.

3rd: Crawford & Wilson, D & K

Northstaff Bay Bomber For Crowstaff JW

Black brindle and white nearly 21 months. Keen and alert looking young lass who is maturing nicely. Strong yet feminine head upon her, strong neck leading down to a wide enough front and nicely sculpted shoulders. Prominent spring of rib, close coupled. She moved well when asked to and with a bit of drive. Another one that I’d prefer a slight (very slight) shaving off her in body just to get that extra hardness to the touch particularly along the loin area but she’s more than enough of a package to get the job done on the mat. Best of luck going forward with her. More to come from her in my opinion.

My thanks again to everyone who entered under me.

Judge: APRIL HANDS (Skyestaff)

PUPPY DOG/BITCH – SKYLAND CONSORT

OPEN DOG – CH GAZSTAFF’S BLACK MAGIC

OPEN BITCH – ALPORT DARK QUEEN

I would like to thank the EASBTC for their invite to judge SACs at the Jubilee open show and for their generous hospitality. My ring stewards were a great help and kept the ring running smoothly.

I was on the whole pleased with the exhibits entered on the day. Gutted for some exhibits who chose not to play ball on the move, who may have otherwise been placed but without movement I cannot assess soundness. Some promising youngsters coming through. All placed had correct dentition however I did come across base narrow canines and undershot mouths mainly in the dog exhibits. Fitness in a few exhibits could have been better.

Puppy Dog/Bitch (8,2 abs)

1st SKYLAND CONSORT

Very lovely feminine Bb bitch who oozes quality from all angles. She is clean lipped, with nice width to muzzle and adequate underjaw, dark eye, small neat ears and good open nostrils. An eye catching and very pleasing expression that instantly draws you in. Compact but balanced, wide front with depth of brisket, more than adequate spring of rib with good sternum. Neatest of well padded feet, short black nails. She is tucked up, short coupled and in fit but not overdone condition for one this young, holds a level top line on the move with drive.

2nd TORKAVI THE LAST DRAGON AT TESHLEYSTAF

Dainty Bb and White bitch, standard sized and not overdone. Clean foreface with good underjaw, well-proportioned head with rose ear set ok. A little less substance than one all over but again compact. Well laid shoulder with good angulation front and back made for sound movement with correct tracking. Her feet were neat, tidy and padded well. Some maturing to do, keep at it.

3rd ALPORT NO SURRENDER

This Bb bitch is very pretty, she has a broad skull, well placed small ears, round eye and is clean, however would prefer more length to muzzle which is very short. She is well off for bone with wide front, adequate spring of rib and stands on tidy feet. Moved well.

Res SKYLAND IMPERIAL

VHC BLOSSOM QUEEN BEE FOR LABRASTAF

Open Dog (13,1 abs)

1st CH GAZSTAFF’S BLACK MAGIC

Very well balanced compact bb dog, very much with the wow factor. Looks great from all angles and has an expression to die for. Bull & Terrier head shaped, not at all overdone and so clean, with good width and length. Open nares, dark round eye set correctly, with small neat rose ear used to his advantage. Neck strong but not too short, leading into well laid, muscled shoulder. He stands on the neatest of feet, has adequate spring of rib and depth of brisket. He is short coupled. Correct rear angulation and strong hind quarters allows for powerful, agile movement, correctly tracked. He glides and holds his top line firm.

2nd CH DRINGSHAW ATHOS JW

Have liked this dog from ringside for a while. Whilst he is top sized, he is still very well balanced, would have preferred a little more covering today. Nicely put together W & Red dog. Strong head with good length of muzzle and clean lip. Dark eye and pigment. He too has an expression that draws you in and demands. Front has good depth through and is well constructed. Strong pasterns on neat, padded feet. Slightly longer cast than one but does not obscure the overall image. Visually muscled rear with hard 1st/2nd thigh to touch, hocks well let down. This dog moves with drive and purpose, covers ground with ease.

3rd ILLORI AKINLANA JW ShCM VW

Athletic Bb w white dog, who is in very fit condition for his age and credit to his owner for keeping him in such good nick. Super clean head, with open nostrils and nice length to muzzle. Front strong, with adequate width leading into well sprung rib, good tuck up. He is nicely compact without being cobby. Stifle well bent and hock let down. Again another who moves with power and drive, tail carried low.

Res GEORGIE POERGIE POPS AT TESHLEYSTAF

VHC CWMHAF AMBASSADOR

Open Bitch (17)

1st ALPORT DARK QUEEN

Super feminine Bb bitch with a cracking headpiece. Good width to head and muzzle, to depth with pronounced cheek muscles and strong under jaw. She has dark round eyes set to look ahead with complimenting pigmentation. Her expression is punishing once she spots her prey, cocktail sausages. An adequate width to her front but I would prefer more spring of rib if I were being picky. She stands on well boned fore and hind limbs, strong pasterns and tidy well padded feet, nails short.  Slightly longer cast, which is acceptable for a bitch, with good tuck up. Stifle well bent with hocks well let down, aids sound parallel movement with topline held firm.

2nd ILLORI CONSTELLATION JW

Another lovely example from this kennel, Pretty bb bitch, with strong head, Muzzle broad with good length. Open nares leading to correct dark round eye set to look ahead. Neat ears well placed. Front wide and well ribbed. She is in hard fit condition, close coupled, firm Loin with good tuck up, 1st and 2nd thigh visible. Adequate bend of stifle with hocks well let down. Tight short gleaming coat enhances her condition. Moved with ease. Was pipped by 1st on expression.

3rd MAXSTAFF MISS VIVIENNE AT TESHLEYSTAF

Stronger all round than 1 & 2, this Red & W bitch did not disappoint.  She has a lovely expression, with fab dark pigment, round eye, good muzzle length and open nares. When viewed from the side has a very attractive profile. Compact in build and well muscled, she has adequate rib and correct shoulder angulation and no looseness at elbow. Similar to 1, was longer cast but still balanced. I would have preferred more front width but this did not distract from overall soundness and she moved well with drive.

SPECIAL AWARD CLASSES

Judge: CHARLOTTE BURTON

A huge thanks to East Anglia for inviting me to judge the Special Award classes at their September Open Show. It is a real honour to be on a schedule of a breed club and I was delighted with the entry I received. For a new judge, to have a class of twelve dogs was phenomenal and a great learning curve. The biggest thanks goes to every exhibitor for bringing your dogs and taking my decisions so humbly, it is so very much appreciated.

Puppy (6,1)

1st    NORTHSTAFF BAY BOMBER FOR CROWSTAFF

Beautiful 10 month old black brindle bitch with white dot on chest. Really clean head and expression with correct bite, perfect blend of bull and terrier in her skull to muzzle ratio, topped with neat rose ears. Good width to chest for her age with tight feet up on her pasterns, well placed shoulders leading to a compact body. A level topline holding a good spring of rib and well angulated rear, finished with correct tail set. Moved well for her age and handled to perfection. She really does show herself well - one to watch!

2nd  RONJAC ROB ROY MCGREGOR

This 8 month old solid black brindle dog was the only dog among a class of very feminine bitches and stood out for his strength and substance - he’s all boy! Stronger all over than 1st, strong head with deep stop, round eyes and correct bite housing big white teeth. Good width to his front with correct shoulder placement and depth to brisket developing nicely. Good spring of rib leading into well angulated rear and correct tailset. He’s still very much a baby with lots of puppy skin to grow into but looks to be developing into a lovely dog. Lost out to 1st on her overall balance and maturity. Moved well for his age and handled well.

3rd   ROWELLSTAFF TIGER EYES

Res.  BILROSESTAFF SHES THE ONE

VHC GEORDIESTAFF REET FETTLE

Open Dog (13,4 ab)

1st    CH GAZSTAFF’S BLACK MAGIC

3 year old solid black dog who is certainly in his prime in the peak of fitness - certainly the fittest dog I judged on the day. Strong head with deep stop, round eye, correct bite and rose ears used to his advantage giving a wicked expression. Super balanced dog all over with well muscled shoulders held by tight feet on strong pasterns. Short neck leading to good spring of rib, level topline and well muscled backend. I sometimes feel it’s harder to see muscle on a black dog compared to some of the lighter colours, but his condition was fantastic. The gleam on his coat showed the work his handler puts into his fitness! Correct tailset when stood and on the move. With bitches in season around, he was having a good sniff but he moved well once he managed to get his nose off the floor. Thank you for bringing him!

2nd   FAIRLENIUM’S IRON MAN

5 year old white dog with red patch on one eye. Standard sized boy with strong head of good depth and breadth, correct bite and clean lips. Dark round eyes with excellent pigmentation. Really liked the substance of this dog with good width to his chest, depth of brisket and shoulder placement. He had a good spring of rib and correct tailset. Preferred the strength in backend of 1st today. Moved and handled well.

3rd    ZAKDAN DEVIOUS DEVIL

Res    DEKAYRO MYSTIC MAC FOR CROWSTAFF

VHC   FAIRLENIUM’S AMERICAN PIE

Open Bitch (13,1 abs)  What a fantastic class. I was absolutely spoilt for choice here wishing I had more cards. Thank you for bringing your beautiful girls!

1st     NIATONA PANDORA’S BOX TO ELITEBULL

14 month old red and white bitch with patches over eyes and what resembles a red cape over her back, white chest and legs. For one so young she excels in breed type of exactly what I think a stafford should be - standard size with good strength and substance which won her this class. Strong feminine head with excellent skull to muzzle ratio, dark round eyes, excellent pigmentation and neat rose ears. Strong neck leading into well placed shoulders and good depth of brisket. Tight feet, well up on pasterns and no looseness at her elbows. Level topline which she held on the move with a low carried pump handle tail. Well muscled back end which helped her move with drive around the ring. In my voice recording, I quote “Gorgeous!” Will challenge the best in the future, best of luck with her.

2nd   HAPPYSTAFF KISSES OF FIRE

2 year old black brindle bitch who looked like she had been having some fun with some scrapes to her coat, but Staffords are Staffords and can’t always expect them to be in pristine condition and this didn’t detract from her quality - I hope it’s from not being too naughty! Slightly taller than my 1st place. Absolutely loved the expression on this girl, she really watched me with her beautiful round eyes and neat rose ears. Excellent skull to muzzle ratio with lovely clean lips. Nice width to front with clean shoulder placement. Good angulation on front and back allowing her to move well. Lost out to 1st on the preferred substance but still a beautiful girl.

DOGS:

Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to the officers and committee for inviting me to judge dogs at this very prestigious show. Congratulations to all connected with the club for finding this fantastic venue, it's smashing. The organisation from the get go was great, accommodation, hospitality, setting and lovely spacious big rings all contributed to a wonderful day. Secondly and most overwhelming was the wonderful entry my co judge Andy Dodswoth and myself had, a sincere thanks go out to all of you who came from near and far (overseas) to give me the opportunity to go over your wonderful dogs. I know that everything is so expensive so once again a big thank you to you all.
Thanks to my very competent stewards Jo-Ann and Charlotte for keeping me in line and also hydrated because as we all know it was extremely hot!!!!. I hope you two ladies enjoyed the day as much as I did. Having last judged dogs in 2018 (4 years old ago) I was looking forward to this one. When I judge I always try to look for dogs that are well balanced, height to weight ratio, fit, healthy, move freely with purpose and drive and show me that they have a bit of fire in their belly ( I love it!!!) Overall the quality was good but there were far too many carrying too much weight for me, too fat and were very soft to the touch. I was also shocked to see weak splayed feet with long toes and nails, roadwork is not always the answer but will help somewhat, on these two matters of concern for me I explained to the exhibitors my placings regarding these issues. It's only my opinion but hopefully they will take it on board and try to sort it out before another show, they know who they are, so I will not be mentioning it in any individual critiques not to jeopardise their chances under other judges. As I've said many times before this is a "dog show" so try to prepare your dogs to their full potential, and don't give people like me easy excuses to place your dogs down the line (it's too expensive) conditioning and fitness cost very little!!!!.
Also another concern for me were small cramped incisors and small misplaced canines, this displayed today by some big winners, sorry but not for me. I explained this issue with my placings to the exhibitors, so again I will not individually critique this issue.

Top Size Yes!, Balanced definitely Yes!!, movement absolutely Yes!!!, fitness you bet it's a Yes!!!!, WOW what a dog. Upstanding R/W Pied straight out of the top draw, a true blend of bull and terrier, he's a big lad but he is so well balanced for height to weight ratio no matter what angle you look at him from, he has a beautiful strong clean head shape of correct proportions with great depth of skull and breadth of muzzle, well placed big black as coal round eyes, small rose ears and when he uses them he has an expression to die for. From the shoulder angle he looks superb. Tight clean lips, good underjaw housing a perfect bite with large well positioned canines, big black nose with wide nostrils, his front is strong and straight with strong pasterns and tight feet with short nails, lovely reach of neck leading down to well laid back shoulders with good length of upper arm, terrific rib and brisket that is level to elbow, he has a good strong body core that enhances his lovey clean outline that flows into a tight tuck up. He is a real picture of strength, power and agility. He was turned out in fantastic fitness and condition just what I look for. His rear assembly shows good muscle tone to both 1st & 2nd thighs and has the correct angles which allow him to position himself correctly. He stood four square and constantly showed himself off, and when asked to move he went like a well oiled machine, still showing me the spark and devilment in his eyes that I love to see in a Stafford. This dog blowed me away today and for me he fully deserved top honours. DCC BIS Well done to all concerned and all the very best for the future!!!!       DOG CC

BITCHES:

First of all, a big thank you to the Committee and Club Members for giving me the honour to judge their Championship Show.  I was looked after from the moment I arrived right up to the end.  I must also mention my two Stewards, Kim Dowse, and Dave Butler, who did a great job and made my job run smoothly, and of course the exhibitors.

Happy to report not many gay tails, and not one bad mouth, but unfortunately still too many down on their pasterns - also a few with poor rear end movement.  On a good note, overall I was impressed with the quality.  It was not an easy day for us all - really hot.  The dogs coped well.  I hope you all enjoyed your day.

Minor Puppy (7, 1 abs)

1st    KIRSTAFFS DOLLY'S DAREDEVIL

Red white front and feet.  This class had got some promising girls to go over my first placing.  I was very pleased - her head developing nicely, all’s well in the mouth - chest width coming straight front, up on her toes - correct shoulder angulation, spring of rib coming along.  Her moment for one so young was encouraging. No hesitation to place her first.

2nd  CALLASTAFF FIVE YEARS AT BOWFERRY

B/Brindle white feet.  Another youngster coming along nicely.  Ears neat, eyes, round and dark.  All’s well in the mouth, her front coming, straight legs, tight feet with enough pad.  Her spring of rib coming along with a nice tuck up.  Once she got moving and settled, her movement did not show any problems.

3rd   NORTHSTAFF BAY BOMBER FOR CROWSTAFF

This girl also coming along nicely.  Everything coming together and as it should.  Tidy ears, eyes dark, no problem in the mouth.  Straight front and tight feet, short coupled, movement - coming along nicely for a youngster.

B/Brindle with white chest and neck.  Lovely looking girl.  When she stood, typical head shape.  Ears were neat, eyes round and dark, teeth large and clean with correct bite.  Square front with deep brisket.  Legs straight with good bone.  Feet tight with good pads.  Neck short and strong, going in to correct lay of shoulders.  When viewed from above nice figure of eight.  A firm backend with bend of stifle.  Plenty of drive on the move keeping her topline.  Handler and dog worked well as a team.

2nd  HAPPYSTAFF KISSES OF FIRE

Came 1st in Novice with write up

3rd   POWERPACK CHEROKEE JW

B/Brindle, white on chest.  Correct head shape with balance. Ears were neat, eyes round and dark, and set correct.  All’s well in the mouth.  Square front, straight legs with enough bone.  Slightly turned out at the feet.  Well padded.  Plenty of spring of rib.  All’s well in the engine room.  Kept her topline on the move - well done.

Veteran (17, 3 abs)

1st   REKRAHSTAFF MISS ATTITUDE CUM GEORDIESTAFF VW

My heart was won in this class.  She is fifteen years old - could not deny her her day.  She had a twinkle in her eyes, her tail was wagging, and that was it for me.  For her age she was looking good.  I am pleased to say the dog judge also agreed with me, so she was awarded BEST VETERAN and to top it all, she was given a prize for Eldest Veteran in show.  Well done.

2nd  CH TRAWDEN ICE AND SPICE JW

White/red markings.  Still looking good.  Still got a good head shape with depth, ears are neat, eyes dark, mouth still in good shape.  Her front is square and legs straight.  Slightly turned out at feet.  Still got good spring of rib.  Everything working in the rear end, and showing good muscle.  Handler certainly got the best from her.  Well done.

3rd   CH BOLDSTOCK AM I BOVERED

B/Brindle like second, still looking good.  In good head shape, well balanced ears, neat.  Dark eyed.  Mouth clean with correct scissor bite.  Square front, straight legs, plenty of bone.  Her feet are well padded.  Like 2nd showing plenty of muscle.  Everything still working together.  Her movement still sound.  2nd and 3rd - when I checked the names - I was not surprised to see they were champions, as they still have champion qualities.

Many thanks to the East Anglian Staffordshire Bull Terrier club and their hard-working Committee for the invitation to judge at this Special Valentine Show. My thanks to my steward on the day and the hospitality shown by the club. But I feel that I must mention some dog’s temperaments were not as they should be on the day, and if we lose the temperament of the Stafford, we have in effect lost our breed. Having said that, I had some lovely dogs to judge in a wonderful atmosphere and finally thank you to the exhibitors for their support and taking my decisions in a sporting manner.

I would like to thank the hard working committee of East Anglian Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club, for their kind invitation to judge the 'specials' at the club Open Show. I was delighted with the dogs I had the opportunity to judge. It was great to hear the applause for all the winners, making a good atmosphere. My thanks to my stewards, but most of all you, the exhibitors for giving me the pleasure of your lovely dogs

Puppy Dog/Bitch (7, 2 abs)

1st     Yates’ ZAKDAN DEVIOUS DEVIL

Very smart 8 month old black brindle dog, impressive in his outline and stature. Thought him to be well balanced with good substance, but in no way exaggerated. Lovely head piece, strong and clean, lovely dark piercing eyes, neat rose ears, well developed cheeks with strength to the foreface and under jaw. His strong neck flowing into a well held level topline. Ribcage is well sprung and short coupled. Limbs showing good bone, and on tight feet. Shown in good muscle tone and moved with drive whilst holding his outline

2nd    Rowe & South’s ILLORI CONSTELLATION

Fell for this 7 month old black brindle bitch, a real babe but what a sweetie. Everything is in the right place, just needing to drop into herself a little more. She has strength yet so feminine, with lovely clean lines. Her head is well proportioned and balanced, small neat ears, eyes are dark and intelligent with a hint of mischief. Good width in front, nicely boned limbs onto tight feet. Holding a firm topline. Nicely angulated rear and moved soundly.

1st     Stillman’s SIKAISTAFF SHADOW WARRIOR AT MAIDENDALE
Impressive and imposing 2 year old black brindle dog, loved his size, substance and masculinity. Very balanced on the stack, with clean lines. Pleasing strength to the head, neat rose ears, well placed dark round eyes giving an intense but friendly expression, good length to the foreface and well developed cheeks. His clean neck flows seamlessly into a well held firm and level topline. Good depth and width to the brisket, lovely spring of ribs and short coupled. Hindquarters show a good width of thigh and well let down hocks. Presented in super muscle tone and gleaming coat. A positive mover with lovely drive

2nd   Williams’  ILLORI BACK CHAT

5 year old dark brindle dog, who is at the peak of fitness and condition. Lovely head, showing depth and strength. Neat rose ears and dark round eyes, with the correct length to foreface and distinct stop all give a pleasing head piece. Straight and strong front, with good width and enough depth. Holding a good hard level topline both stood and on the move. Hindquarters are well muscled not quite the width of thigh of winner. Positive mover, parallel and with drive

Open Bitch (16, 6 abs)

1st     Rowe & South’s ILLORI BOOTIE LUV
Clean outline to this 5 year old brindle bitch, she of a nice overall size and has a lovely flow to her outline, all wrapped up in a muscular package. Most feminine of heads, but with the desired strength and proportions. Neat rose ears, dark round eyes, well developed in the cheeks and under jaw. Standing with good width in front and enough depth, well boned limbs and neat feet. She held her topline when stacked and moving. Good spring to the ribcage, a fraction long in loin. In super fit muscular condition. Looking the part on the move, true in her footfall and holding her outline.

2nd    Fairhurst’s FAIRLENIUM QUEEN OF MARVEL

Most impressed by this 4 year old black brindle bitch, of a different type to winner, but with much to like. She is well boned and with good substance all through. Balanced in her head proportions, with strength yet feminine. Clean lips and good under jaw. She has a really keen and alert expression from her lovely dark eyes. Liked her front, deep with good width, and proportionate strength to her bone. Feet not quite as neat as winner. Lovely spring to the ribcage, firm topline, and well set on tail. Pleasing rear, good width of thigh which is well muscled and bend of stifle. An easy and true mover:

Firstly, I would like to thank the committee for asking me to judge their show and to the exhibitors for accepting my decisions in the vein that we have come to accept as the norm for our very passionate breed. Thank you to my stewards for keeping me on the straight and narrow. The venue was excellent with weather to match. Hospitality was first class as was the attitude of the staff.  Exhibitors were extremely gracious and very sporting with their applaud for others which made my day more enjoyable, thank you.  I found the exhibits turned out in very good condition with muscle tone varying from good to very good.  Dentition was on the whole good with the odd one mis-placed.

Minor Puppy Dog (2)

1st      Hands & Wyatt’s

SKYESTAFF WINTER SOLDIER

8 ½ month old black brindle. This chap caught my eye straight away. He is very appealing with a dark round eye and that “Look at me” expression. Neat ears. Clean- lipped with correct scissor bite. Enough bone for one so young covering to match. Straight front leading to well-padded feet. Enough rib for his age. Low tail set and good bend of stifle. Moved well.  One to watch in the future.

2nd    Howard’s

MATRIXSTAFFS KILGHARRAH

Same age but taller than one. Dark eye. Correct dentition and good length of muzzle. Stood four-square. Short nails with well-padded feet. A little longer in back than one. Carried a level top-line.  Preferred the tail carriage on one. Moved OK.

Lovely colour of red with white chest. Nice head piece with dark round eye giving him a pleasing expression. Correct ears. Good width to muzzle. DOGS

Firstly I would like to thank the committee and members for inviting me to judge at their championship show I consider it a great honour. After everything that has happened over the last eighteen months it was great to see everybody getting back to some sort of normality and meeting up again with friends old and new. My thanks go to the stewards who made my life easier on the day and the exhibitors for bringing their dogs under me and accepting my decisions in such a sporting manner. I would also like to congratulate the committee on their choice of venue and the hard work that was obviously put into making the whole weekend such a success.

DOGS

Thank you to EASBTC and their members for inviting me to judge this show today and thank you to my ring stewards Kim Dowse and Dave Butler for keeping everything moving and in order under what were difficult conditions with all the additional requirements for Covid 19 safety. It has been such a long time that we’ve had no shows and everyone at EA did themselves proud with their organization and preparation.

Despite having another EA Championship show the previous day, there were very few dog absentees (only 5) and even if the exhibitors were suffering from fatigue, fortunately for me the dogs were not and seemed to be happy being out and about strutting their stuff in the ring.

I appreciate that I refer very often to proportion, balance and bone but, for me, once you have established that a dog has the pre-requisites of meeting the breed standard and moves well, these qualities are paramount. Good movement can only come from sound construction (both bone and muscle) and exaggeration in any form can only be detrimental to the overall soundness and “fit for purpose” of the dog.

Overall, the quality and soundness of the dogs was very good. Nothing, and no-one, is perfect so yes, there were some imperfect mouths but this was predominantly only minor front dentition. It also goes without saying that some dogs moved better than others with a little high stepping and some exhibiting a degree of convergence at front, rear or both, however, this was a minority and generally movement was good. One recurring theme in my notes was “more rib please” so, if there was a common “fault” on the day, it was the lack of adequate spring of rib in too many exhibits which we need to be aware of as it is this spring of rib which gives the lungs room expand and facilitate stamina.

Minor Puppy Dog (7, 1 abs)

1st        Howard's  MATRIXSTAFFS                                                             KILGARRAH

who, at under 7 months old is still a baby but very smart and keen black dog with a small flash of white on the chest who has presence beyond his tender age. Close, gleaming coat complimented by dark nails set in sturdy feet he stands 4 square. Head development is appropriate for his age with well set keen, dark eyes. Showed and moved well with good topline both standing and on the move. Obviously he’s not the finished article but definitely one to watch as he shows much promise.

2nd         Hammond's

HAMMYSTAFF RED REVENGE

just over 7 ½ months old, is a strong red with a white blaze on the chest and 1 white foot. No colour dilution here. Good head shape is accentuated by a dark mask which extends over the eyes giving further definition and epression. Slightly older than 1 st and equally soundly constructed with similar attributes, however, ears not as neat which should improve with further head development and seemed a little skittish on the day otherwise it was a close decision.

3rd      Cherry's        FINNSTAFF PISTOL                                                                   PETE

nearly 8 ½ month old. Another smart red with white chest and older than 1 st and 2 nd so more developed, however they had the edge on the day. All round, a good dog with appropriate head proportions and bone who needs time take advantage of his many attributes.

11 ½ months old, very well presented black with small white patch on chest and white on all feet. Well-proportioned body and head with broad chest, good bone, strong feet and close coupled body. Balanced head shape and proportions with dark eye, good mouth, well set ears showing his intent and interest and so deserving of his awards today. Moved with purpose and covered the ground effortlessly and one I shall look forward to seeing when he is fully mature.             BEST PUPPY IN SHOW

2nd      Bilton's

BRIGANAH SMOOTH  OPERATOR

just under 10 months old black but 6 weeks is a long time in puppy maturity. This one needs time to come into his own, especially as he is little taller and narrower in the head than 1 st and his ears are little thicker which makes them seem heavier but generally all there and just needs to develop

3rd      Boggins'

LUTHIAS LOCH TAY

just over 9 months old black and only a week out of minor puppy so against older, more mature dogs this was a disadvantage on the day, however, he is compact and soundly constructed. He showed well and shows much promise.

FAIRLENIUM’S AMERICAN  PIE

just over 14 month black and white pied with striking ring presence who immediately catches the eye and who, on closer inspection, certainly does not disappoint. Colour markings can be deceiving but there is nothing more that could be asked of this splendid dog. This is a strong and purposeful dog with good bone throughout and such a typical, strong, correctly proportioned head, well set keen dark eyes, correct bite, broad and deep chest, well padded feet and good reach of powerful neck leading to well laid shoulders and a level topline. Strong musculation throughout with good rib, neat tuck and well coupled. Good angulation and bend of stifle at the rear complete the picture of an altogether well proportioned, well presented, honest dog who thoroughly deserved his awards on the day. If he delivers on the promise that is there he will definitely be one to watch for a long time. I thought it was not right to give him the CC as no dog can, or should, be the finished article at this age but, given a few more months to polish and perfect his many obvious assets, he should be a hard to beat.   RESERVE CC & RESERVE BEST IN SHOW

2nd        Crawford's

DEKAYRO MYSTIC MAC

just under 18 month black with white on the chest and front feet presented in gleaming condition. A generally heavier set dog than 1st with many sound and desirable qualities including strong bone, pigmentation, proportionate head, good dentition, general all round proportion and angulation but also a little heavier in the ears and unlucky to meet such a strong contender as 1st. There can be no complaints to coming 2nd to the Dog RCC and RBIS.

 3rd        Page's

also just under 18 month, also black and presented in gleaming condition. Smaller than 1st and 2nd  but he moved well and equally has his own qualities including a strong well proportioned head with defined stop, tidy ears, strong neck, level topline, good bend of stifle and generally well-constructed.

1st     Harper & Whittaker's     BETHALEESE’S POLDARK

a 21 month old black dog with very small white detail on front who is bang on breed standard size. An all round good dog with no exaggeration or omission in any quarter. Correct head, keen expression, good stop, appropriate body and head to body proportions with strong bone, deep chest and sturdy feet. Back and coupling proportionate to size and well muscled hindquarters. Another all round good, honest dog.

2nd     McConnellogue's

LONEMOOR POLARA

a 19 month old black who only just got pipped to 1st place. A bigger dog than 1st so higher on the leg and longer in the back but with all the same virtues of proportion, bone and head configuration with excellent head breadth, distinct stop and neat well placed ears making for a very attractive and typical expression. This decision could easily have gone the other way.

3rd    Norton's

TARAIEL STORMZY OF TIKKURILAN

also a 19 month old black and similar in size to 1st but a little less spring of rib and a little longer in the back and slightly lighter eye than 2nd.  On his own merit, this is a generally well constructed, balanced dog with a gleaming coat and a beautifully shaped head.

WAYSTAFF MOON SHINE

A stunning white dog with red patch over one eye who, for me, just screams “beat me if you can”. From shiny black nose to tip of tail I could find much to praise and little to criticize. I know no dog is perfect so if I had to criticize I’d ask for slightly smaller ears but with so much to praise this is small criticism indeed. A thoroughly well balanced and proportioned dog with strong bone throughout and tight, well padded feet. The typical Stafford head, broad and deep, is carried proudly on a strong neck and has all the correct ratios and proportions. In outline, the head has a strong and pronounced stop complimented by plenty of cheek muscle, a clean bite and dark, well set eye. The body leaves little to be desired. Excellent depth and breadth of chest lead on to well placed shoulders and elbows, well sprung ribs, close couple and distinct, neat tuck. From the rear the pleasure continues with a well placed tail and enough muscle and strength to complete the picture. Altogether, in my opinion, a hard to beat dog. DOG CC & BEST IN SHOW

 DAZMARNIC CETEWAYOS  KRAAL

a gorgeous red with white chest and front, white front legs, white blaze between the eyes and white on the back feet who was unlucky to have the CC and RCC dogs present on the day. A little heavier and shorter on the leg than 1st but still oozing quality. Strongly boned with a good breadth and depth of chest, strong neck, well laid shoulders, level topline, short coupled and neat waist completed by a well set tail and strong hindquarters. Broad and deep typical head, in all the right proportions, with strong stop, clean lips and dark well placed eyes make him a pleasure to behold.

CALLASTAFF SON OF THE MOON

a gleaming, close coated compact black brindle dog with a small white blaze on the chest. How spoilt was I to have these 3 to go over and how unlucky for him that the other 2 were also present. He could easily be a winner on another day, however, in today’s company he was a little shallower in the chest and with less spring of rib than 1st but otherwise all there and a quality dog. Excellent head shape and proportions with good breadth and depth, good stop and pronounced cheek muscles, dark well placed eyes and neat ears made for a typical and engaged, slightly cheeky, expression. Good pigmentation throughout. Bodily, a bit longer in the back but muscular and athletic.

a lovely red with white front which stretches up around the collar, down the whole of 1 front leg and down the back of the other and a narrow white strip between the eyes. Yet another feast for the eyes (and hands). Strongly boned and compact with broad chest and well placed elbows leading to laid shoulder, level topline, good rib, short back and enough couple. The clean and clear cut head is caried on a strong neck with good reach and is furnished with dark well placed eyes which have expressive dark marking around them. In profile, the typical proportions of the head and well pronounced stop give the head a sense of keen purpose.

2nd       Jordan's

DAZMARNIC KNOW WOT I MEAN JW                                                                ShCH

another top quality red with just a little white on the chest. Higher on the leg and proportionately longer in the back than 1st and not as deep in the chest, however, otherwise a sound, balanced dog. Good head shape, broad and deep in the scull with dark eye and attractive dark markings around the eyes give for a quite intense expression. Strong neck, well laid shoulder, level topline, neat tuck with well muscled hind quarters complete the profile.

AUS CH MOOSTROOPER KENTUCKY                                                                 MOON

a well presented white dog with just one red patch on his back, presented in good tone and condition. The short, close coat allows some skin colouration to show through (as with many white coats) which I find quite attractive and adds character. Equally well boned and well proportioned to 1st and 2nd with a broad chest and well laid shoulders in front of well sprung rib leading to a defined tuck and well muscled hind questers which provide power to his movement.

11 year old white and black pied with black patch covering his cheek, eye and ear on 1 side and a black ear on the other as well as other black markings on his saddle, around the body in front of the hind quarters and over the rump. This is definitely not a dog you can overlook who, despite his age, is still a good looking dog who, bodily, looks much younger than his age. Presented in excellent condition and a credit to his owners he still has plenty of bone, a good breadth and depth of chest, a strong neck, great muscle tone and definition, a level topline and a bend of stifle missing in many modern dogs. Even his head, where many dogs can lose muscle tone as they age, he defies his 11 years presenting typical proportion and strong clean lines and well deserving his place. Unlucky to be pipped for BVIS by younger and more nimble looking bitch veteran. BEST OPPOSITE SEX VETERAN

2nd      Thomas'

BIGGLESWICK FUNKY DEVIL  JW              8 ¼ year white dog with some red marking on the rump and one upper leg. This is another veteran who has not lost his body or his spark and was presented in excellent condition. Slightly finer than 1st but good proportions all round and bodily sound with plenty of bone and muscle and a superb head. Large, dark, well placed eyes still lively and alert, clean lips and well carried ears show he still has plenty of mischief in him.

BITCHES

I would like to thank the EASBTC committee for inviting me to judge bitches at their championship show, for their hospitality shown to me throughout the day and for the beautiful gift. My thanks also to the stewards who ran the ring so efficiently and to the exhibitors for allowing me the opportunity to assess their dogs and the sporting way in which my decisions were accepted.  I was pleased with the overall quality of the exhibits present which made for some tight decisions. I found a number of the exhibits to be lacking muscle tone and carrying too much weight, a bit more work could have made a difference to some individual placings.

BEST OPPOSITE SEX PUPPY IN SHOW - DRINGSHAW ATHOS

I would like to thank the committee of the East Anglian Club for inviting me to judge this show. The

first club show for over a year. Despite the extra procedures to make the show safe from COVID

I thoroughly enjoyed my day. I tried to make allowances in time and patience for many dogs who

were either at their first show or were a bit “ring rusty”. I had a great entry and I thank each and

every exhibitor for bringing their dogs under me. I hope we will have many more days like this

one this coming year!

Minor Puppy Dog  (3, 1 abs)

1st      REGALBULL ENZO

Standard size black brindle dog just 6 months and 1 day old. His head is developing nicely, he has nice dark round eyes good ear carriage helping to give a pleasing expression. His mouth is correct housed in a clean muzzle which is not too short. His body is developing nicely for one so young with correct angulations front and back and a low tail carriage to finish things off. His movement was hard to assess as with many today but he seemed to enjoy his walk up and down the field. Good luck with him

2nd     BRINSTAR RED MARAUDER

Standard sized red dog with white flash and dark muzzle. Good ear carriage. Mouth as it should be. Body developing along the right lines

Puppy Dog   (4)

1st     DRINGSHAW ATHOS (Best Puppy Dog)

Top sized red and white dog that commands attention. His head is really beautifully marked with good pigmentation on his nose and very dark round eyes, it is clean, no sign of wrinkles, muzzle is of correct length (not too short), tight lips lovely rose ears, correct mouth. He is well off for bone on his straight front which is correctly angulated. He has an appealing body developing with a good spring of rib and level top line leading to strong, correctly angulated hind quarters with a correctly carried tail. I really liked this dog. Very smart!

2nd    TILICIOUS LITTLE BY LITTLE

Another nice red and white dog! This one is standard sized again has lovely markings and has some attitude in the ring. Good pigment, dark round eyes pleasing head-shape and expression, good mouth, Decent angulation back and front body developing well. Two nice red and white dogs…..

Correct angulations back and front rib developing nicely he holds a level topline and has a pump handle tail. He had a tendency to crouch a little but this can be corrected with training and experience

2nd   TILLCARR FIRE COLLECTIVE

Top Sized black brindle dog who again commands your attention. I was looking all day to find a dog or bitch that I liked more than this dog but was unsuccessful! He has a lovely clean, well-shaped head with no lippiness, correct length of muzzle again not too short, rose ears, nice dark round eyes all contributing to a handsome expression. His head is not overdone in anyway. His teeth are large and correctly placed. His front is straight and well boned. If I was nit picking I would have preferred slightly more angulation to his front but show me the perfect dog! He has a good spring to his ribs, a level top-line, good bend of stifle, strong hind quarters, and a low tail-set. Overall the package is one of strength and athleticism that I like to see in a Stafford

2nd    TRAWDEN ROCKET MAN

Standard sized white and red dog nice head and expression with dark round eyes and excellent pigmentation. Good angulation back and front. He had a tendency to stretch his self out a little spoiling his outline but again this can be fixed with a little training and show experience

Standard sized black brindle, good head expression and ears with the correct length of muzzle. (There were some in this class that had muzzles that were too short) Nice body shape that earned him his second place. His angulation to front is good I would have preferred slightly more angulation to the rear. His body is well proportioned, balanced, close coupled. Good condition with a line down his back one of the fittest today. Overall a smart dog

3rd     GAZSTAFF'S BLACK MAGIC

It was a close call between 2nd and 3rd so I asked this dog to also stay for a critique. Another nice standard sized black brindle dog. Standard sized black brindle bitch with white flash. She has a lovely straight front with a “medium weight” of bone. Nicely shaped head strong but feminine, dark round eyes and neat ears all contributing to a pleasing and alert expression. Her mouth is correct. Correct angulation back and front (Fore-chest obvious and correct bend of stifle at the rear). Her body is compact with a good spring of rib, correct tail-set. The more I looked at this bitch the more I liked her. She was the winner of three classes so I had plenty of opportunity! She still has to mature but when she does she will trouble the best. Good luck with her for the future. I had no hesitation in giving her the Best Bitch award as well as Best Puppy and RBIS

1st     CH BOLDSTOCK AM I BOVERED JW

(Best Veteran in Show & Res Best Bitch)

I cant believe how time has gone I remember her doing really well as a puppy and going on to get her title but this was the first time I had chance to see her really up close. Lovely coated dark stripey brindle with lovely pigmentation all round. Her head is strong feminine and clean, no lippiness at all. Correct depth to her stop with dark round well placed eyes and neat rose ears giving her a stunning expression. Good angulation back and front compact closely coupled body with a good spring of rib, tucked up in the loins giving a very pleasing shape to her overall, Athletic , strong and feminine all at the same time! Pleased to award her RBB and Best Veteran in Show

2nd    TARAIEL LORDE JW ShCM

Another one who I cant believe her age! Well-constructed standard size black brindle bitch with lots of white to her front and legs. She has a nice shape to her head with a good length to her muzzle, dark round eyes neat rose ears, black wide nostrils and a correct bite. She is a well-constructed bitch with a straight, well boned front with correct angulation to her shoulders. Her body is strong and compact with plenty of rib a level top-line obvious waist leading to rear quarters that are well bent at the stifle. Her tail is carried low. Thanks again for bringing her
