BEST PUPPY IN SHOW - ELLCHANSHA ONCE UPON A TIME

Firstly I want to thank the committee and its members for giving me the opportunity to come and officiate under the name of this great Club. It was a huge honour and it was greatly appreciated. There are many great Staffordshire Bull Terrier Breed Clubs in the UK and it’s without question East Anglia are one of those clubs that set the bar with their organisation, honesty and professionalism as they go about their business running shows, and amongst themselves as a finely tuned unit. Hats off to each and every one of you involved and thanks again for your generosity and hospitality.

I want to thank my two ring stewards Jo-Ann Essex and Kim Dowse for keeping everything running smoothly with no issues at all as I assessed the dogs throughout the day. I finally want to thank all the exhibitors for spending their hard earned money and bringing their dogs under me. It was very much appreciated, and what a fantastic bunch of exhibitors you all were on the day. Thank you again.

On my assessment of the dogs on the day,I can genuinely say that there were some very nice exhibits throughout all classes. regardless if were at open or championship level, some of these dogs do and will compete at all levels and rightly so. The general quality of the exhibits were of a very good standard with very little concerns in relation to dentition, I only witnessed a couple of tightly placed canines that were not severe in any way; otherwise some very good mouths in all classes. I did come across a few nostrils that were a tad narrow, but again the majority were of no real concern but that’s not to say that breeders shouldn’t be aware of this apparent issue that is creeping in. I did see some overweight young dogs, usually a simple enough issue to put right. Our breed comes in all shapes and sizes. While some owners, breeders and judges may prefer to keep a certain type of Staffordshire Bull Terrier at home, when we step into a ring to pass judgement our breed standard is what we adhere to. We have a blue print - a description that depicts an ideal specimen who carries the required virtues that were carefully created to develop our breed, purposeful and fit for function. These requirements should still always be physically there to be seen during assessment on how the exhibit looks and conforms. All this said, despite wider opinions and room for improvements, I surprisingly feel that we’re doing OK in relation to what I had the privilege of going over in the ring. We’re holding our own to keep the breed in good stead and let’s keep that positive approach going forward.

SPECIAL AWARD CLASSES

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the E.A.S.B.T.C for inviting me to judge their Special Award classes at their Open Show. Your support is greatly appreciated, and your kind hospitality was second to none.

I would also like to thank all those that allowed me the opportunity to ‘go over’ and judge their dogs. Also, I would like to say thank you for the sportsman like way all my decisions were greeted.

Let us not forget, that breed shows are a chance for owners to show off their pride and joy to the best of their and their dog’s ability. One would even compare such shows to a beauty contest. Therefore, there should be no excuses in turning out a dog with a dirty coat, dirty teeth and long nails. Please bear this in mind, as several were of this quality on the day which was disappointing.

Bar this, all the dogs were generally in good health, there were some with ‘tight’ canines, but thankfully none inverted. Conditioning and fitness on some could have been better, in an elderly dog or puppy one can accept this to some degree, but not in a young dog or one that should be in their prime. Pounding the streets will help sort this out and hopefully deal with the splayed toes…!

Also, there are those that try to get their dog’s heads up while on the move with treats and tit-bits. Please stop...! This doesn’t help you or your dog, all that happens is the dog begins to pick their front feet up high and stretch the dog’s neck, all which turns to the dog’s gait being that of a ‘dressage’ or ‘hackney carriage’ movement.

SPECIAL AWARD PUPPY DOG OR BITCH

1st Johnson’s ELLCHANSHA ONCE UPON A TIME.

Black brindle bitch, just shy of 7 months old. Good and pleasing length of muzzle to skull ratio, with tight clean lips. Correct scissor bite, neat ears and a beautiful dark eye, giving a very pleasing and femmine expression. Clean short neck, good lay of shoulder, neat and clean front leading down to tight and neat feet. This youngster has enough bone one would expect on one so young, level top line on the move and when stacked. Good bend of stifle and correct tail set. This little lady enjoyed her day and she knew how to attract everyone’s attention. Quality always stands out. Beautiful side profile. Very happy to see her later in the day win BPIS.

Head deep through, dark eye, and beautiful rose ears, setting off this lad’s very clean and handsome expression. Short clean strong neck, leading into good muscular shoulders, good bone on this lad and lovely straight front, leading down to neat and well-padded feet. Adequate width of front would prefer just a little more to really set this boy off, but this is my own preference. Good spring of rib, tail set low and carried correctly on the move. Well let down at the hocks and good bend of stifle, a muscular rear that moved this boy with purpose. Shown in hard and fit condition, a true credit to his owner/breeder.
