DESPERATE PLEA FOR FOSTER HOMES FOR RESCUE We are always in need of experienced homes to foster rescues - preferably homes without other dogs. If you can help please email easbtc@thedoghouse89.freeserve.co.uk or jo@scruffydogs.co.uk |
Recently the Club had an information stall at both the Suffolk Dog Day and Norfolk Dog Day - a really worthwhile venture, gaining a feew members, giving out information about the Club and our lovely breed as well as making some converts! Special thanks to our wonderful members who manned the stall! Here are some photos from both days

Hi, I'm Lesley and I'd like
to welcome you to our website. I will gradually be adding to the content of the
website, but meanwhile if you have any queries or need help or advice on any aspect of
Staffordshire Bull Terriers please get in touch.
Phone 01205-871762 - I am
generally around, although if you don't get an answer please phone back another time (I'm
afraid I can't return calls if folk leave their numbers as I do get so many that my
husband would divorce me if I swelled BT profits by returning them all!)
or e-mail easbtc@thedoghouse89.freeserve.co.uk
PUPPIES
If you are thinking of getting a Stafford puppy I would strongly urge you to check out the very good advice on this link, including reading all the info about the hereditary eye problems in the breed (PHPV and Hereditary Cataract) and neurological problems (L2-HGA) in the breed. Click here for our 'health issues' and 'health information' pages.
Also make sure you check out the appropriate certificates so that you know what you are looking at: http://www.eastangliansbtclub.co.uk/certificates.html
PLEASE NOTE: The Breed Standard quotes the following clause for 'colours': Red, fawn, white, black or blue, or any one of these colours with white. Any shade of brindle or any shade of brindle with white. Black and tan or liver colour highly undesirable.
THESE ARE THE RECOGNISED COLOURS FOR STAFFORDS - BE AWARE THERE ARE NO 'RARE' COLOURS AND YOU SHOULD NOT PAY ANY DIFFERENCE IN PRICE FOR ANY COLOUR.
TERMS SUCH AS 'MERLE', 'CHAMPAGNE', 'SABLE', 'SILVER', 'CHOCOLATE', 'MOTTLE', 'LEMON' ARE NOT ASSOCIATED WITH THE STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER - DON'T BE CONNED!
BREEDING
As well as the article on breeding
from your bitch we've added an article on using
your dog at stud. well worth a read if you are thinking of breeding from your dogs.
PLEASE DON'T FORGET the Stafford is such a popular breed we
have continual trouble with Rescue because of people over breeding, and producing puppies
that they either can't get homes for or sell to the wrong homes. Please only breed
from your Stafford if it is a good example of its breed, of sound temperament, has current
DNA health testing certificates in place and you have homes lined up for your precious babies.
Check our kennel
directory for details of some of our members dogs available for stud
RESCUE
As a breed we have a huge Rescue problem. If you can help in any way by offering to foster, vetting homes, assessing dogs, transporting, fundraising or if you are able to offer a good home to an unwanted dog please contact Jo Ann, our Rescue Coordinator jo@scruffydogs.co.uk

DDASG PETITION KENNEL CLUB RESPONSE TO STAFFORDSHIRE
BULL TERRIER BREED SOCIETIES As
an active part of the Dangerous Dogs Act Study Group (DDASG) the Kennel
Club is supporting the Lord Redesdale’s ‘Dog Control Bill’ which
seeks to better protect the public against dogs dangerously out of control
without compromising any individual dog’s welfare. As
well as the Kennel Club, the DDASG includes organisations which represent
animal welfare, local authorities and veterinary professional
organisations which include Battersea Dogs Home, Blue Cross, British
Veterinary Association, Dogs Trust, The Mayhew Animal Home, Royal College
of Veterinary Surgeons, Wandsworth Borough Council and Wood Green Animal
Shelters. Together,
we believe that the Dangerous Dogs Act should be overhauled to better
protect the public, placing greater responsibility on dog owners and
remove the huge welfare implications affecting dogs deemed to be of a
certain type. Lord
Redesdale’s Private Members Bill embodies the principle of ‘deed
not breed’ and opposes
breed specific legislation on the grounds that a dog’s behaviour
is influenced more by its environment, the training it receives and the
responsibility of its owner, than it is by genetics (i.e. its breed or
type). This is supported by recent research by Bristol University which
found that Bull breeds (which includes the banned breed Pit Bull) are no
more likely to be aggressive than any other breed. Specifically, the Bill would look to change the
following: ·
Repeal the
Dogs Act 1871, the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 and the Dangerous Dogs
(Amendment) Act 1997 including
breed specific legislation The
police expend significant resources on enforcement of the Dangerous Dogs
Act, with large amounts of money being spent on the seizure and kennelling
of dogs simply because of their breed type - many of which are returned to
their owners once proved to be of good temperament. Removing breed
specific legislation would allow those resources to be used more
effectively elsewhere, and preferably to concentrate on those dogs showing
unprovoked aggression. ·
Introduce Dog Control
Notices The
vast majority of dog attacks are as a result of the irresponsible actions
of dog owners, who have either not taken the time and trouble to train
their dog correctly, or have indeed trained them to behave aggressively.
Dog Control Notices will apply to all types of dog that have acted
dangerously without provocation, caused an injury to another protected
animal (as defined by the Animal Welfare Act 2006), caused harm, or caused
a person to reasonably believe it will cause harm and works to prevent
serious incidents of aggression occurring by allowing preventative action.
·
Apply to both public AND
private places If
you support these principles please show your support by contacting your
local Member of Parliament and asking them to support Lord Redesdale’s
‘Dog Control Bill’ or by signing the DDASG’s petition:

HEALTH LEAFLET
The article
about health in our recent newsletter is for EVERYONE who loves our breed,
whether or not they own a Stafford, whether or not they have a rescue or a dog
bought from a breeder, or even pet shop, whether or not they plan to breed from
their dog. It really does affect us
all and we all need to be spreading the word.
We have produced a leaflet about health testing and breeding responsibly. We would like to ask everyone to take copies along to wherever they think it will attract interest, be that the vet, local pet shop, boarding kennels, training club, dog groomer, behaviourist etc. You can download it from the website here
It is important that we get the message out as far
and wide as possible.
The reasoning behind this leaflet is twofold.
Firstly it is to highlight the tests available and recommended when
breeding from a Stafford, and secondly it is hoped that by educating people to
breed responsibly and also to only buy puppies from responsible breeders we can
help to combat the horrendous rescue problem we have.
MESSAGE FROM CAROLINE KISKO, THE KENNEL CLUB:
Help us STOP irresponsible breeding!Call on the government to apply the same basic principles which govern the Accredited Breeder Scheme, to the breeding of ALL dogs. The time has come for responsible dog breeders and lovers to stand together. Please sign our petition and show your support for dogs. Sign the Kennel Club’s petition here Thank you for your support |

SOME EAST ANGLIAN EVENTS AND PROUD MOMENTS

L-R 3rd Avril and Saffi 1st Laura and Mia 2nd Jo and Bacon
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON LOST & STOLEN DOGS!
************
I have to make mention of
a couple of events of which the Club is rightly proud. Over recent years we
have been happy to implement the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme which is a basic
'good manners' test for dog and owner, held at puppy, bronze, silver and gold levels.
We have held testing sessions for the scheme at East Anglian events, sometimes the open
shows, but more often at the Fun Days, and have given displays of Good Citizen requirements
at other SBT breed club shows and Fun Days and also at Crufts for two years running in the
Good Citizen Ring. In 2001 and 2002 the Club was justly proud to be nominated and then to
win the Kennel Club's Annual Award for the Good Citizen Dog Scheme in the category for
Breed and Canine Clubs.
Following on from the success of the GC displays we have also encouraged a small team of committed agility enthusiasts from the Club to show the general public just how well Staffords can compete at agility. Displays have been given not only at the EASBTC shows but also at other Stafford club shows, culminating in the Kennel Club inviting our team to take part in two displays held in 2004 in the Special Events Ring at Crufts and also another display in the Dog Days Out ring at Crufts - what an honour for the Club and what a thrill for the team and also for the spectators! It was the success of these Crufts displays that spurred us on to arrange the first ever SBT agility show held in October 2004 at Sacrewell Farm in Peterborough.
Please let me know if you would like to see anything particular on the website, or have any suggestions for the Committee.
Look forward to hearing from you!
