DOGS

I was delighted to have the privilege to judge this prestigious show I would like to thank the committee for the warm welcome myself and Brian received. Also a special thank you to my stewards who ran the ring efficiently. As for the exhibitors I know it’s a cliché but some of the places could be reversed on another day especially post graduate, limit and open. The one thing that concerned me was the condition of some of the coats. Surely as ambassadors of the breed on view to the public we should present our dogs in at least clean condition.

MINOR PUPPY DOG (6)

1st        Scarlett & Reid's RAMBLESTAFF EBENEZER GOOD - BEST OPPOSITE SEX PUPPY  Nice headed puppy with keen expression  dark round eye straight front with ample bone. Nice tight feet good bend of stifle and level topline standing and on the move.  Handled to perfection to win Best Puppy Dog but had to give way to a lovely puppy bitch today. Very promising. Will watch his progress with interest. Good luck!

2nd        Asker's DAZMARNIC DON'T ELL 'EM Another promising puppy similar comments to first apply but just preferred the overall balance of one

2nd        Summerfield's CANAKEY MAD ABOUT THE BOY Red puppy with a lot to like when you view from every angle. Dark round eyes and neat ears. Lovely expression when he was alert. Lost out on ring presence to 1 but could change places on another day.  Both puppies should do well

RBIS in compete agreement with my co judge.

Thank you for the pleasure of going over him. Should make top honours.

1st        Gilmour's BRITSTAFF BY JOVE OVER DUMBRITON - C.C. BITCHES

This judging appointment was the highlight of my 28 years in Staffords, for an Australian judge to be invited to award CCs at a breed show in the UK is as good as it gets, and therefore I will never forget this appointment, it was an extremely enjoyable day.

I would like to start by thanking a number of people.

Firstly, Harry Coble and the Committee of the Club for the opportunity, many thanks. Some people in the UK may not be able to appreciate the magnitude of what the invitation means to someone from Australia.

Secondly, Ann Corns (and John) and David Levy (and Val) for providing me with accommodation, assisting me playing tourist (but Ann I have seen enough English country lanes to last me for a lifetime now) and generally for great hospitality. Ann Corns told me no-one leaves her house hungry or sober and I now believe it!

Thirdly, the Australians that contacted me in the lead up to judging, wishing me the best of luck, thank you. I was truly surprised by the number of you who made contact wishing me well, and the fact that I knew you would all be keeping close to the results was nice to know.

Finally, and by no means lastly, the exhibitors, firstly for their entries in the first place, but most importantly for making me feel so welcome, right down to ordering some good Australian style heat to judge in.

Generally I found the exhibits to be of a very high standard, with great depth in most classes. Indeed a number of placings were very close and could easily be different on another day. Heads in particular were of an excellent standard throughout, to the extent that upon listening to my critique tape afterwards I found myself saying another very good head over and over, so if my critique that follows seems somewhat repetitive regarding heads, that is because that is the way it was. As this is such an important aspect of our breed this was a pleasing aspect of my entry. On the other side of the coin I did see a number of quite poor feet, this being the only negative trait that cropped up more than a few times and therefore worthy of mention

MINOR PUPPY BITCH (16/1a)

1st        Morris' AYMSTAFF RED HOT CAPER – 7 month old, red. A bitch of very good type throughout. Excellent strong head of correct proportions, with a lovely deep stop. Good strong muzzle with correct bite. Lovely dark round eye, full of expression, finished off with lovely small rose ears. Well boned, well angulated in the shoulder. Ribbing acceptable for her age, level topline, good strong hind quarters, correct pump handle tail and moved well in all directions

2nd        Booth & Grimwood's RAMBLESTAFF JORJA ON MY MIND – 8 month old, black brindle. Another quality bitch with an excellent strong head showing femininity, yet strength. Good strong bone, good front, and probably slightly better in rib than the girl ahead of her. Lovely short coupling with level top line, pump handle tail well set on. Very good hindquarters. Today this girl messed around on the move and it was the fact that it was difficult to see her move adequately that prevented me from placing her higher despite being a worthy contender for first.

HC        Booth & Reid's RAMBLESTAFF TAKE ON ME

PUPPY BITCH (11/0a)

1st        Waters'     ASHSTOCK CONSTELLATION – 10 month old, red. A lovely young bitch of obvious quality that took my eye almost immediately, standing about 15 inches. Fantastic headpiece displaying great strength but also clearly that of a bitch at the same time. Excellent strong muzzle, good bite, excellent stop and lovely dark round eye. Her wonderful expression was finished off by near perfectly placed small rose ears. Excellent forequarters, well angulated, substantial bone. Very good ribbing, short coupling with level top line that she maintained on the move. Well muscled, well angulated hind quarters. Moved well. BEST PUPPY BITCH and with Mrs Dick’s agreement, BEST PUPPY IN SHOW.

2nd        Raynsford's CARIBBEAN COCO AT RAYNSTAFF – 9 month old, black brindle with white blaze. Another quality bitch. Good head with excellent strong muzzle, good strength of skull but not quite the strength of stop of the girl ahead of her. Lovely dark round eye, and well placed small rose ears completed a quite pleasant picture. Good muscular neck correctly falling into well laid shoulders, well boned, but slightly less than first, good chest, level short topline. Excellent hindquarters, pump handle tail well set and carried. Moved well in all directions

3rd        Booth & Grimwood's RAMBLESTAFF JORGIA ON MY MIND

Res        Day & West's IZUMIS LUK AT U LUKIN AT ME

JUNIOR BITCH (19/5a)

1st        Funnell's KEWAUNEE POCAHONTAS FOR POWERPACK JW – 17 month old, black brindle. A very classy bitch indeed. Excellent head showing great depth through the skull, strong short muzzle, correct bite, lovely large teeth. Good stop, dark round, well placed eyes, well set rose ears. Excellent neck resting on well laid shoulders, well boned, good feet. Excellent ribbing with lovely depth of brisket, short coupled, level topline maintained at all times on the mover. Very well muscled in the rear and very well angulated. Moved well in all directions in the class, however, in the CC line up crabbed on the move which took her out of contention at that point for higher honours.

YEARLING BITCH (10/2a)

1st        Lowe & Hedges' RAMBLIX REVISIONIST AT KHANS PRIDE JW – 21 month old, black brindle. One that stood out from the start as needing to be considered.  Also shown very well and showing great keenness and balance. Very good head of correct proportions, good depth through and strong muzzle with good scissor bite. Lovely dark and round eye, well placed looking straight ahead. Ears of the highest order, correctly placed and carried well. Well muscled neck of correct length sitting well on correctly angulated forequarters. Good bone, good feet, well ribbed, nice short coupling with a level topline that held at all times. Well muscled rear, correct tail, moved well in all directions. If there was a criticism to be made of this girl it would be that she could be carrying slightly less weight.

2nd        Jackson & Whitehouse's BOURTIE WOT A STEAL JW – 17 month old, black brindle with a white blaze. This was a very close call, and on another day could easily be reversed. A very similar bitch in type and presentation to 1st. Very good strong yet feminine head, with good stop. Strong muzzle, good bite, lovely dark round eyes, excellent rose ears set on well. Good neck, well laid shoulders, very good bone, good feet. Well ribbed with good depth of brisket. Lovely short coupling. Topline level when standing, but just lost it ever so slightly on the move and this was the difference between first and second today. Well muscled and angulated rear. Moved well.

2nd        Booth & Reid's RAMBLESTAFF TAKE ON ME – 8 month old, black brindle. Lovely feminine head of good proportions, with good muzzle housing correct bite. Lovely dark, round eye, good small rose ears well set on, lovely soft expression. Good neck on well laid shoulders, well boned, good feet. Ribbing acceptable for a youngster with room for further development, good front. Short coupling with level topline whilst standing but tended to get lost slightly on the move. Very well muscled hindquarters of very good angulation. Well set on and carried pump handle tail. Moved well.

GRADUATE BITCH (7/1a)

1st       Welsh's VALGLO MATILDA FOR STAFFWIZE JW – 18 month old, black brindle. Immediately took my eye due to wonderful expression. Very good head showing the strength and femininity I like. Good strong muzzle with good bite. Well placed dark round eyes, well placed rose ears of correct size to balance the head and give that lovely expression she showed. Well muscled neck, correct angulation in the forequarters with ample bone. Good feet. Ribbing whilst adequate could be ribbed back for preference giving the impression of a longer than desired coupling despite a nice short back. Level topline, well muscled rear, well placed and carried tail. Moved very well.

2nd        Parker's RUMROURKE RUBIWAX OF NETTLEWORTH – 31 month old, black brindle. Quite pleasant head, and whilst I would prefer slightly more cheek, she possesses a good strong muzzle with correct bite, good dark round eyes and well placed, well carried ears of correct size for the head allowing for quite good expression. This bitch has a lovely body and this got her the placing today, excellent ribbing, good depth of brisket, good front, well laid shoulders, level coupling that was maintained on the move despite being a whisker longer in the back than I would have preferred. Well muscled, well angulated hindquarters. Moved well in all directions.

POST GRADUATE BITCH (26/6a)

This class was particularly pleasant to judge with a good number of exhibits possessing obvious virtues and in the end many of the placings were quite close and decided only on minor points.

1st        Reaney & Jackson's ROLENSKA LEADING LADY OF SAXANJAX – 23 month old, black brindle. A bitch that fits perfectly the size, balance and overall proportions that I prefer, and with obvious qualities to add to that picture. Fantastic headpiece of near perfect balance. Good strength maintaining femininity, excellent muzzle, large teeth, good bite. Almost perfectly placed round eyes that were very dark, almost black at first glance. One of her real virtues was her lovely ears, set on well and carried very well at all times. The head picture was completed by a lovely soft expression. Well muscled neck, nestling into well laid shoulders. Very well boned, excellent tight feet. Excellent ribbing, with good depth of brisket, very good front, coming to hand as desired. Short coupling, level topline maintained at all times. Well muscled, well angulated hindquarters. Very well placed and carried pump handle tail. Moved very well in all directions and well handled. The overall picture of this bitch was one of great quality and excellent overall balance and it was a pleasure to award her RESERVE CC today.

2nd      Taylor's NIATONA FIFI LA FUME – 24 month old, black brindle. This was a very close second. This girl is very similar in overall type and construction to the one in front of her, but just slightly more substantial overall, and what separated them in the end was my preference for the slightly smaller bitch overall. Excellent head of good strength in all areas, yet still clearly that of a bitch. Good strong muzzle, good bite, excellent stop, lovely dark round eyes well placed. Excellent ears, well set on and carried. Good muscular neck sitting well into well laid shoulders. Excellent bone. Very well ribbed with excellent depth of brisket, and coming to hand as required. Good short coupling with level topline. Well muscled rear of correct angulation. Well set on and carried pump handle tail. Moved well in all directions.

3rd       Nunan & Buuten's TRUFFLESTAFF COUNTRY GIRL

Res        Atherton & Kemp's TORNADOSTORM DANCING QUEEN

VHC        Membury's MITZSTAFF TOUCH OF CLAZZ

HC        Beard's HASWETH CRAZY JAYNE

LIMIT BITCH (16/2a)

Another very good class with a number of good quality bitches in it.

1st        Hirst & Bibby's TARAIEL TRINITY – 38 month old, black brindle with a white front. Very well put together balanced bitch with excellent square look to her when viewed from the side and it was this that first caught my attention on this girl. Very nicely proportioned head of good strength and depth through the skull in particular. Good muzzle with correct bite, lovely dark and round eyes well placed. Well placed rose ears adding to lovely expression overall. Well laid shoulders, excellent bone, well ribbed with adequate depth in the brisket, very good front. Lovely short coupling with level topline, well muscled rear of correct angulation. Well set and carried pump handle tail. Moved very well in all directions.

2nd        Simpson's       BRIGANAH BLACK ORCHID JW – 17 month old, black brindle. Again a very nicely put together girl of good balance. There is a lot to like about this girl, particularly her head which showed great strength yet remaining that of a bitch. Excellent strength particularly in the muzzle, good bite. Lovely dark and round eyes well placed. Good deep stop. Very well placed ears of correct size to give balance to the head. Lovely expression. Good muscular neck on well laid shoulders, good bone. Very well ribbed, with good depth of brisket. Short level topline which was maintained at all times. Well angulated and muscled hind quarters, excellent pump handle tail set on and carried well. Whilst she moved well, she was a bit flat on the day and this was the difference in the end between 2nd in this class and perhaps pushing for higher honours.

3rd        Winrow's JAYNEZE HASTA LA VISTA

VHC    Gent & Jackson's ADVOCATES KWEEN OF THE RING

HC        Turner & Short's CROSSGUNS BIANCA OF JAYJADES

OPEN BITCH (16/8a)

This was another outstanding class stacked full of quality.

1st        Blacker's       CH CROSSGUNS MEMPHIS BELLE – 36 month old, black brindle. There is little more that I can add to what has previously been written about this bitch. Whilst she is more substantial than I normally prefer in a bitch, her overall quality, hardness of condition and balance demands attention and at the end of the day I decided to set my size preferences aside for a bitch of clearly outstanding quality. Her head in particular is of the highest order in quality. Excellent strength throughout, excellent bite with teeth of great size. Very good deep stop, excellently placed very dark round eyes. Excellent ears giving perfect balance to the head and outstanding expression. Very well muscled neck sitting very well on very well angulated shoulders. Excellently boned, excellent tight feet. Ribbing of the highest order with excellent depth and well ribbed back also. Good short coupling with a level topline that never waivered throughout the day. Very well angulated hindquarters, muscled to perfection with a particularly prevalent second thigh. Very well set on and carried pump handle tail. It was an absolute pleasure to award this girl the CC today.

2nd      Robinson & Hedges' LEGER PHOTO FINISH FOR RAMBLIX JW – 24 month old, black brindle. Another high quality bitch with not quite the same size and substance of the bitch ahead of her, but very well balanced. Her outstanding virtue is her head, amongst the best seen on the day, with good strength and depth about it but still clearly that of a bitch. Excellent muzzle with good bite. Very well placed dark round eyes and very well placed and sized ears that completed a very good picture of a Stafford bitch head. Well muscled neck. Excellent angulation in front, with ample bone, good feet. Very well ribbed with a good strong coupling that was a whisker longer than 1st and this was one of the deciding factors in the end. Level topline at all times. Well angulated rear of ample musculation. Good pump handle tail well set and carried. Handled very well and moved well in all directions.

BRED BY EXHIBITOR BITCH (11/3a)

1st        Smart's ARNHEM NICE N FIESTY – 33 month old, red with white blaze. Another bitch that displayed more substantial structure than I would normally prefer, but again a quality exhibit that deserved recognition despite my normal preferences. Excellent head showing great strength, although I would have liked a little less loose skin about it. Excellent strong muzzle with good bite, great depth in the skull, good stop. Lovely dark round eye, good sized well placed ears. Good strength in the neck, well angulated forequarters, excellent bone. Very well ribbed, good depth about the brisket, strong short coupling. Very well muscled and well angulated rear, correct pump handle tail well set and carried. Moved well but was inclined to slightly loose her topline when viewed from side on.

2nd        Thomas' SUNNYSTONE STEEL MAGNOLIA – 41 month old, black brindle. A bitch at the top of the standard. Very good head displaying adequate strength throughout, with good stop. Correct bite, well placed dark round eye. Ears well set on and of good size for the head. Well angulated forequarters that were well boned, but feet could be a little tidier. Excellent ribbing, her body being her best virtue in my opinion, ribbed back very well with good depth in the brisket. Strong short coupling. Well muscled and angulated rear, good tail. Did not move as well as the girl ahead of her today and this was one of the deciding factors.

VETERAN BITCH (9/3a)

1st        Williams' CH ECLYPSTAFF SHEZA TRUBLE JW – 7 years and 4 month old, black brindle. A lovely quality bitch that came under consideration in the final 4 for the CC despite her years. In excellent condition for her age, and comparing well amongst many here younger than her today. Lovely head structure, with strength and femininity. Good strong muzzle, excellent bite, deep stop, strength through the skull. Lovely dark round eyes, very well set on and carried ears. Overall a head full of expression. Good strong neck sitting on well laid shoulders, with very good bone. Well ribbed including in both length and depth. Lovely short coupling showing strength and remaining level despite her years. Well muscled and angulated hindquarters. Correct pump handle tail set on and carried well. Moving well in all directions. Had this girl not been showing a little inherent softness that comes with age she may have pushed for higher honours.BEST VETERAN IN SHOW

2nd        Stanway & Albutt's   CH CRASHKON MEL BEE JW – 8 years and 9 month old, black brindle. This girl is an absolute credit to her owner to be in such good condition still at her age. Very good strong bitch head, strong muzzle with scissor bite, good stop, excellent depth through the skull. Well placed dark round eye, excellent ears in both size and placement. She is showing fantastic expression today. Good neck on well laid shoulders, ample bone. Very well ribbed with depth of brisket in particular taking my eye. Good short coupling, holding a good topline at most times. Well angulated and well muscled (albeit a little soft these days) hindquarters. Excellent pump handle tail well set and carried. Movement is starting to show some signs of deterioration which should be expected at her age, however satisfactory in my estimation.

BRACE (judged jointly)

1st        MR & MRS WELLS' BRACE - only exhibit. 2 black brindle dogs of very similar type and matching well. The aim of the Brace Class in my opinion is that the exhibits should both be matching in type and work as a team, and in this regard, in particular should gait around the ring beside each other. This team, whilst satisfying the first requirement did need to do a little more work on the second one, but in the absence of any competition remained worthy of the win

BEST  BREEDER

JAGSSTAFF KENNEL

3 exhibits, 2 teams of Black Brindle dogs and 1 team of red dogs. The most important requirement for this class in my opinion is consistency of type in the exhibits presented so that one can clearly form the opinion that the exhibits in question must portray the belief in the judge that the same breeder has bred them and that the breeder in question has a distinguishing type that they bring forward consistently in successive generations of dogs they breed. Therefore whilst the type in question must have some notable quality attached to it, the winner of this class may not necessarily have the best exhibit(s) on display on the day, it is a combination of reasonable quality and consistency of type. This being the case the “red” team were the winners on the day as there were identifiable qualities in the exhibits, their heads in particular were all very good and of similar structure giving rise to the fact that the typiness of the exhibits in that team was the best of the 3 teams on display as the other 2 teams had greater variation in type despite the presence of some very good quality exhibits
