DOG CRITIQUE

Having been bitten 2 days previously whilst separating an Australian Shepherd and West Highland White at a Companion Dog Show it was reassuring to find every single Stafford well behaved and under proper control. The quality was also very obvious and several of the later classes were extremely tough with several of those winners in strong contention for the major prize. It was a real pleasure to see such a strong final line-up. I think the hardest thing about preparing a report is that we each tend to have particular aspects of the breed standard which we prioritise so it is hardly surprising that on review, the main winners often have similar attributes. When reviewing my notes, I frequently find almost exactly the same points being highlighted. It becomes a further challenge to try and make the report interesting as well as accurate. I hope I have succeeded. After temperament, the most important characteristic of a Stafford is surely balance and most exhibits were excellent examples of that blend of bull dog and terrier from which the breed sprang. Interestingly my two usual major concerns of mouths and toplines were noticeably better than recent shows I’ve judged so either the breed is improving or the exhibitors are getting smarter about what I’m looking for. What I did notice this time were a number of light-eyed dogs, especially in the younger classes, and a number of dogs that were clearly not getting sufficient hard exercise – evident from both being slightly overweight and soft feet.

My thanks to the members, committee and exhibitors for a splendid day and a special thanks to my two stewards John and Mary for looking after me

LIMIT DOG  (14, 4abs)

1st Scott & Hinsley’s Tocsam Eco Warrior The quality of the classes just kept improving and many in this were in contention. The worthy winner is a well balanced brindle dog with a really typical head, strong, square, sharp features. Neat ears, super intense expression and scissor bite with large teeth. His body is square and his legs parallel both stationary and moving viewed from all directions and he just gives a real impression of power as he strives to dominate the ring.

    ld.jpg (76896 bytes)
2nd O’Donnell’s Rockstaff Vagabond for Odenstaff  A typical example of a well balanced red and white pied dog with many of the attributes of the 1st. Strong head, super expression, excellent bone and a level topline that stayed totally level even while powering around the ring.

OPEN DOG  (18, 3abs)

1st Mace & Davies’ Ch. Stormbull Solo JW  One of the top 3 classes I’ve judged in 20 years and this young champion is a worthy representative of the breed. Having already chosen 2 or 3 super dogs to win previous classes, this lad had to be something special to win the CC – and he is. Some brindles can be quite coarse or seem to have huge punishing heads on an average body. This dog is well balanced throughout with a strong, well shaped head, neat ears, pronounced stop, round dark eyes, calm but observant expression. He has large teeth with a perfect scissor bite, stocky neck set on broad shoulders supported by a square front on powerful legs. A really deep brisket, exceptionally broad spring of rib and level topline and short coupled. His hindquarters are muscular and low set, his stifles are well bent and he moves with real power.     rbis.jpg (40536 bytes)
2nd Van Aken & Raamsden’s Staffmate’s Noble Ambassador  Another balanced brindle with neat ears, excellent expression, tidy lips and scissor bite. Superb mover, one of the best of the day and maintained an excellent topline at all times. Reserve Best Dog & RCC

BITCH CRITIQUE

The ultimate privilege, to judge at your own Breed Club championship show!  With the organisation taken care of so professionally I was left to concentrate on the task in hand which was work enough, so my thanks to my two elegant lady stewards and to the rest of the team. Having always been aware that it is impossible to judge from ringside I was thrilled to be able to get up close to what are obviously the cream of the bitches in the country at the present time. Some observations I would make since the last time I judged at this level in the UK are that uniformity of mouths has declined.  I had very few incorrect mouths, but untidy dentition was more evident than I would like to see.  Similarly, thick and heavy lips were too prevalent.  I found too many bitches that were either carrying too much bone and substance so that they scared the pants off me when I got up close, or ones that so lacked in those qualities that a puff of wind would blow them away.  My mission was to find the blend of bull and terrier in good condition that looked like it was capable of performing its task.  In many cases movement was ‘adequate’ rather than ‘good’ but I have to say I found much better back ends than I saw before, both in width and also in stifle angulation.   My critique will hopefully explain why I placed one before the other rather than just say ‘good this’, ‘good that’, ‘good the other’. Especially in the classes you would expect – junior, limit and open – the quality was such that the final decisions were extremely close.  It goes without saying that temperaments were exactly as you would expect to find – I was in grave danger of receiving a severe washing with every bitch handled.

MINOR PUPPY BITCH (16, 2 abs)

1st      Willis’ Cross-swords Sweet as Candy  mpb.jpg (54521 bytes)    crossswords.jpg (62946 bytes)

What a lovely 6 ½ month old brindle puppy!  She has a beautiful head shape and expression with lots of depth to her skull, although I would prefer to see tighter lips.  A cobbier bitch than the 2nd but nevertheless standard in size with a short back and grand bend of stifle, her feet could be tighter but this may come with age and exercise; she moved well on the mat and responded to her owner like a seasoned campaigner.

2nd           Thomas’ Sunnystone Steel Magnolia

Black brindle darling, the same age as the class winner but a taller bitch, still in balance.  She has less brisket development at this age than the 1st but plenty of time for that to come.   As with the winner I would prefer less heavy lips but she has lovely neat feet, a good topline which she held, and a powerful back end that showed when she strutted her stuff

3rd           Winrow’s Jayneze Hakuna Matata

A well made 7 ½ month old black brindle puppy with a great depth to her skull.  She has good balance and moved out well although not as true in front as the first two and preferred the neater ear carriage of the first two placed

HC       Mills & Keirl’s Quaystaff Jolene

PUPPY BITCH  (16, 3 abs)

1st      Plant’s  Subaron Sharrann      pb.jpg (60934 bytes)

A star from the off, this black brindle young lady has quality in abundance.  At 9 ½ months she has plenty of time for her brisket to develop and settle her front movement, meanwhile she will always be noticed by virtue of her classic shape and style so that each part of her flows into the next effortlessly.  Her handler presents her in immaculate condition with a shimmering coat, trained beautifully and compliments her by sympathetic handling. Sure she will go great guns – the very best of luck with her!  Best Puppy Bitch

2nd           Wilson’s Wilstaff She’s a Showgirl

Although this 10 ½ month old was stronger all over than the 1st and 3rd in the class she scored particularly in strength of back end and bend of stifle over the 3rd place.  Her feet could be neater but she has neat ear carriage, great rib for a baby and a good tuck up.

3rd           Dewar’s Tikkurilan Hi Candy at Mintmarkes

Another stylish puppy, just coming up to one year old, up on the leg to the other two so not quite as balanced but she held her topline nicely on the move.   She lost out on the 2nd place by virtue of less neat ear carriage and less rear angulation

JUNIOR BITCH  (18, 1 abs)

1st      Folwell & Morris’ Ebony Breeze of Rowellstaff RCC    jb.jpg (10700 bytes)

In the class this bitch was an out and out winner for me. Stunning standard sized showgirl, she has a head shape that typifies the breed, showing strength and depth.  Displaying plenty of underjaw, she has a correct scissor bite and clean lips, her dark eyes mesmerise you and her beautiful polished brindle coat can’t fail to impress.  On the move she lost her topline slightly but her overall quality displayed in her bang straight front with great heart room and powerful back end was more than enough to compensate.  In the final line up she continued to show her socks off and I was very pleased to award her the Reserve cc

2nd     Perrott & Di Battista’s Dwstaff Devotion for Perrista

I liked this lady a lot!  Only just tipping into junior so still plenty of time to develop she has style and charisma.  Her handler has her in excellent condition, both in terms of coat and fitness, so that she shines from the inside out.  She lost out to my winner today by virtue of slightly flightier ear carriage and heavier lips but her more positive movement secured her place over the third bitch

3rd          McGrath’s Bijou Belle of Jajca

Another only just into junior this balanced mahogany brindle bitch demanded my attention.  Her ears are a wee bit flighty but held well. She has a lovely chunky rear end and used it to drive off but moved a little closer behind than the 2nd placed bitch

Res          Blacker & Wood’s Crossguns Sexy Thing at Bultery

VHC          Bryden’s Memorable Moments of Gantocks

HC           Kincla’s Alcnik Rosa Parks

YEARLING BITCH  (16, 3 abs)

1st             Kincla’s Alcnik Rosa Parks

This black brindle bitch was HC in the Junior class and well deserved.  She is standard sized and of very good balance with the sweetest of expressions ensured by her round, dark perfectly placed eyes.  On the mat she not only behaved well for her handler but moved soundly and with drive holding her topline.

2nd      Morgan & Morgan-Pistor’s Biggleswick Qui Moi

An extremely pretty red bitch, another with a gorgeous expression enhanced by her strong underjaw.   She is a little slighter all over than the class winner and lacking a little in forechest although she has plenty of width there. She has decent overall balance (even though she chooses to lean into her collar!) and a sound back end

3rd             Hopkins’ Trufflestaff Toffee Truffle

Very sweet brindle pied bitch with the cleanest lips although I would prefer rounder eyes.  She responds very well to her handler but lost out today on the mat to sounder moving bitches, showing truer going away rather than coming towards

MAIDEN BITCH  (16, 6 abs)

1st           Winrow’s Jayneze Hasta Lavista

A well won class and she certainly made her handler work hard for it!  Beautiful outline on this black brindle bitch, everything in balance and flowing. She has a deep stop and keen expression, excellent rib development and good forechest - something lacking in quite a few.  In the challenge for Best Puppy Bitch she presented a problem as she wouldn’t settle enough for me to make a proper comparison so sadly lost out, but she is certainly good enough to hold her own in serious company

2nd      Stone’s Ashbull Tit for Tat

This young lady had a melting expression with dark eyes and fixed me with them throughout the class. She has a very good allover shape, although possibly not the rib of the winner, but with a particularly good underjaw, shapely feet and great coat condition

GRADUATE BITCH  (8, 2 abs)

1st           Shepherd’s Bourtie Once Again       gb.jpg (52029 bytes)

This is a delightful brindle bitch, compact and showing a great outline. Her expression is all the better for having a typical eye shape and colour, clean lips and a defined stop.  Her solid front assembly blends nicely into a shapely rib development and firm topline

2nd           Dwstaff Devotion for Perrista

2nd in Junior and the winner of the Novice class, here she gave way to a cleaner lipped bitch with more brisket, although this will develop as she matures no doubt.  Her fitness is to be commended

3rd           Bruton’s Wise Words

Another decent bitch, a little bigger all round than the two in front of her, with neat ear carriage and a typical head and expression.  She was beaten today by my preference for the size of the others and their more positive movement coming towards

POST GRADUATE BITCH  (23, 7 abs)

1st     Waters’ Ashstock Easter Rose    bbeb.jpg (47863 bytes)

A very beautifully balanced red bitch with stunning black mask and liquid dark eyes who paid good attention to her handler throughout, she has neat feet, perfect weight of bone and a good width of rear end, although I would have liked to see a little more muscle tone.  She scored over the 2nd placed bitch with a cleaner muzzle

2nd    King’s Kylorda Topsy Tinkle

I really took a shine to this young dark brindle lady – she has heartroom aplenty and a shapely rib, with a strong, deep through skull and neater ear carriage than the class winner.  She displayed her charms with aplomb in this strong class and was placed accordingly

3rd     Meek’s Ladarna Leading Edge

Dark brindle bitch of style and quality, although to be critical I would prefer to see a touch more of her all over.  A very close decision between her and the next placed bitch – she just shaded it with her clean outline

LIMIT BITCH   (24, 5 abs)

An excellent class to judge with hair-splitting decisions – very challenging for me, what a pleasure!

1st           Frankland’s Aldwich Go with the Flo

Standard sized black brindle bitch where, again, I would prefer just a fraction more bone and substance but no denying her quality, she was turned out in immaculate condition and an absolute credit to her owner.  Her classic head shape benefits from clean lips and melting expression, although darker eyes would enhance even further, she never stopped showing for her handler.  Her lay of shoulder is true and she held her topline on the move, with excellent musculature shown in her strong backend and has great feet with dark nails.  In the challenge for the Reserve CC I just preferred the better substance of the Junior bitch, but this bitch is a worthy winner of top awards

2nd           Robinson’s Leger Knockout Whist

Whilst this bitch had the bit extra substance I was looking for she was not as true in forward movement as the class winner.  Nevertheless she is a classy girl with neat ear carriage, beautiful dark eyes and a stronger, broader muzzle than the 1st bitch.  Another with good feet and topline, she made the decision a difficult one and it is easy to see her having her fair share of success

3rd           Bulmer’s Sheffstaff Red Rose at Jazzygem

This red bitch demanded attention from the beginning of the class until the very end, interacting so well with her handler.  A showgirl through and through, again with a correct topline and strength of back end, I felt she didn’t quite have the definition of head of the two in front of her today

Res    Corns’ Bekanbar Beyonce

VHC          Norton’s Tikkurilan Ticka Teboo

HC           Johnson’s Tillcarr Ring of Fire

OPEN BITCH   (13, 3 abs)

An excellent class throughout, but causing me plenty of head-scratching moments because of the divergence of type and size.  All of the placed bitches are of the highest quality and decisions have to be made so it was really just down to nit-picking, preference and performance.  Thank you all for the privilege of judging the cream of the crop

1st           Ferguson’s (Ch) Challimers Molly Malone at Fergustaff   ob.jpg (35565 bytes)

This sweetheart brindle pied lady may not be the biggest package but she is quality throughout and when she freestands she is an absolutely breathtaking picture!   Her coal black eyes demanded my attention from the moment she entered the ring – how could I ignore her?  Superb depth of skull to her strong yet feminine head shape, complimented by tight, clean lips, a blunt broad muzzle and neat ear carriage, her strong neck just flowed in balance with her short-backed body and the strength in her back end was obvious with the development of her chunky hams.  She gave a foot perfect performance and was duly rewarded by beating what must surely be the best bitches in the country today to secure not only the CHALLENGE CERTIFICATE but also BEST IN SHOW.  Well done – so thoroughly deserved!

2nd           McComiskie & Dick’s Ch. Bourtie Steal the Limelight
It is so easy to see why this stunning girl is the Bitch Record Holder – impossible to deny her charms and pointless in me cataloguing her points.  Today I felt she was slightly unsettled and I preferred the drive from the back end of the 1st.  She secured her place over the 3rd placed bitch by virtue of more drop of brisket and strength in forechest.  Her record speaks for itself, will be increased and will be held for a very long time to come no doubt – a pleasure to lay my hands on her

3rd     Stone’s Ch Knockon Yes You at Ashbull

Striking young bitch who will always be in the reckoning.  I would prefer a fraction more bone to her forelegs to balance her but she is shapely and well presented.  She is still only a baby and I’m sure her owners have yet to see the very best of her

2nd           Biggleswick Qui Moi

2nd in Yearling, 3rd in Maiden, 2nd in Novice. Always up on her toes and paying attention

A comment about the majority of red bitches here today – even those with seemingly good pigmentation (ie. dark masks, dark eyes, rich coats) still had pale nails – it must puzzle breeders.

1st           Norton’s Ch Tikkurilan Poison Ivy    bvis.jpg (48141 bytes)

Top sized girl, 8 ½ years young, with barely a grey hair to her and liquid dark eyes to melt your heart, she has maintained her lovely shape and carried herself around the ring still holding her topline and very true in front.

2nd     Page & McGowan’s Chelsea Beauty at Chelakaz

8 year old black brindle lady of pleasing standard size, who powered along the mats with a strong back end and keeping her topline.

3rd           Funnell’s Powerpack Satin Doll

The oldest of the bunch at 13 years, but still as lively as any of the others and thoroughly enjoying the outing.  She shows herself with confidence and a twinkle in her lovely dark eyes

What a delightful fun class to judge!

1st     Mr & Mrs McGrath's brace

A really well matched brindle pair of youngsters who moved in unison and really looked the part.   Well done!

2nd    Miss J Essex's brace

This red dog and bitch, father and daughter, moved up and down the mat in harmony, but were less well matched than the 1st in terms of size

3rd    Mr Fletcher and Miss Seedhouse's brace
